Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between September 8, 2002 and September 21, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

9-11-02 - A student at Wilson House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for of two bottles of hard liquor.

9-13-02 - A bottle of hard liquor was confiscated from a student at Hacker House. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-13-02 - A student at Mitchell House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a bottle of hard liquor.

9-13-02 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue-slipped event at Village I. A student who claimed ownership was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-14-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement summonsed a student outside John Bertram Hall for possession of alcohol by a minor. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-14-02 - Four students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the campus hard liquor policy at John Bertram.

9-14-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement summonsed two students for possession of alcohol by a minor in front of John Bertram Hall. The students were also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement summonsed two students on Campus Avenue for possession of alcohol by a minor. Both students were also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-02 - A male was summonsed for possession of alcohol by a minor by Maine State Liquor Enforcement.

9-19-02 - A student at Frye House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a bottle of hard liquor.

9-19-02 - Two students at Wentworth Adams were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard liquor.

9-20-02 - The Lewiston Police summonsed a student for possession of alcohol by a minor on Frye Street. The student was also arrested for disorderly conduct. He was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-20-02 - The Lewiston Police Department summonsed a student for possession of alcohol by a minor. He was also arrested and charged with indecent conduct, disorderly conduct and refusal to identify himself to the police. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.
9-20-02 - Three students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of alcohol at an alcohol free event at the Mays Center.

9-20-02 - Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated from Moulton House. The student who claimed ownership was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-21-02 - A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office for having an open container of beer outside of Turner House.

9-21-02 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard alcohol at Parker Hall.


Drug Related Violations

9-11-02 - A glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was confiscated from a room at Turner House. The student who resides in the room was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-21-02 - The Lewiston Police Department were called to Parker Hall and confiscated approximately eighteen grams of marijuana and two pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana. Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Weapons Possession

9-18-02 - A student at Village Three was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the campus weapons policy. A shotgun, a handgun, and a rifle were brought over to Campus Security.


Theft

9-16-02 - Four cardboard boxes were reported stolen from the storage area at Parker Hall. The boxes contained six pairs of shoes valued at $80.00 each for a total of $480.00, a white cork board valued at $15.00, and a wall clock valued at $25.00. The total value of the missing items is $520.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-21-02 - A staff member reported the theft of her purse from her unlocked office at Chase Hall. The small black backpack style purse was valued at $15.00. The contents of the purse included $25.00 in cash, a checkbook, two credit cards, an ATM card and a driver's license. The total value of the missing item is $40.00. The Lewiston police Department was notified.


Motor Vehicle Theft

9-13-02 - A golf cart belonging to Media Services of Pettengill Hall was stolen and found abandoned behind Hedge Hall. No one was in the area at the time.


Bicycle Theft

9-10-02 - A student reported the theft of his unlocked bike from the bike rack outside of Chase Hall. The 21 speed green Mongoose mountain bike was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
9-16-02 - The above bike was recovered on campus by Security. The owner and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

9-16-02 - An unlocked bike left by the outside wall to Mitchell House was reported stolen. The 18 speed red Schwinn road bike is valued at $50.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-16-02 - A student reported the theft of her unlocked bicycle from outside Pettengill Hall. The red Schwinn was valued at $$30.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
9-16-02 - The bike was found by a student in the bushes in front of Pettigrew Hall. The student and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

9-17-02 - A bike that was left unlocked by the fence of the turf field at John Bertram and was reported stolen. The red and gray 21-speed Fisher mountain bike was valued at $550.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
9-16-02 - Security located the bike by the turf field. The student and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

UPDATE
9-12-02 - A Maruishi touring bike reported stolen on 3-10-02 was turned into Security. The owner and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

9-04-02 - A student reported the theft of his bike that was locked to the bike rack in the rear of Milliken House. The red Giant 18 speed was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-07-02 - A chandelier at Parsons House was damaged during a blue-slipped alcohol event. The three students who were in charge of the event will be held responsible for the $183.84 replacement cost of the chandelier.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

8-26-02 - A vehicle parked on Franklin Street had its passenger side window broken by an object. Damage to the window was estimated at $75.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
