Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between September 23, and October 6, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

9-23-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for carrying an open container of alcohol at the corner of Frye and Main Streets. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-29-01 - A full keg of beer was confiscated from the laundry room at Whittier House. The keg was from a blue-slipped event that was to be held on 9-22-01. A student failed to dispose of the keg within the time frame written in the Bates College Liquor Policy.

9-30-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of alcohol by a minor on Frye Street. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-30-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for consumption of alcohol by a minor on the corner of Wood Street and Campus Avenue. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-30-01 - Another student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for consumption of alcohol by a minor on the corner of Wood Street and Campus Avenue. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-30-01 - A student was summonsed by a Maine State Liquor Officer for possession of alcohol by a minor on the corner of Wood Street and Campus Avenue. She was also referred to the Dean of Students.

9-30-01 - A student was summonsed by a Maine State Liquor Officer for possession of alcohol by a minor on the corner of Wood Street and Campus Avenue. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-02-01 - A keg of beer was confiscated from the basement of Herrick House.

10-04-01 - Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated from Webb House. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-05-01 - An empty keg of beer was confiscated from the second floor hallway at Hacker House.

10-06-01 - A keg of beer was confiscated from Turner House, and a student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Drug Related Violations

9-29-01 - A visitor to Parker Hall had his glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana confiscated by the Lewiston Police Department.


Simple Assault

9-23-01 - Security responded to the area of Mitchell House for a possible fight in progress. Two males in the area were observed grabbing onto each other's shirts, and pushing. One of the males was a student, and the other was a visiting recruit. Security was able to quell the situation. Neither of the males wanted to take any further action.


Hate Incident

10-02-01 - A student reported that as she was exiting Pettengill Hall a juvenile made an offensive remark to her. Security was able to locate the juvenile and his four colleagues. The Lewiston Police Department also responded due to the nature of the incident. The juveniles were issued one year Criminal Trespass Warnings. A copy of the report was sent to the Attorney General's Office in Augusta.


Theft

9-23-01 - A student at Page Hall reported the theft of one of her computer speakers. The second speaker received some damage to the cord, and will have to be replaced. The Dell computer speaker was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-30-01 - A chair that was part of a patio set was stolen from 256 College Street. The white metal chair was valued at $75.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

9-23-01 - An unlocked bike that was left outside Hayes House was reported missing. The dark green Diamondback Wildwood twenty-one speed bike was valued at $25.00. Also taken was a cable lock valued at $15.00. The total value of the missing items is $40.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-23-01 - A locked bike parked in bike rack in front of Smith Hall was reported stolen. The purple Diamondback Sorrento seven speed bike and cable lock were valued at $415.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: On 10-09-01 Security located the bike behind the Mays Center. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

9-28-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from the lounge at Webb House. The green Nishiki bike was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-29-01 - A bike that was left unlocked in front of Merrill Gymnasium was reported stolen. The black LL Bean mountain bike was valued at $285.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-29-01 - An unlocked bike was stolen from the outside bike rack at Wentworth Adams. The navy blue 18 speed Scorpio was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-05-01 - An unlocked bike was stolen from the bike rack at Chase Hall. The red Scott Summit was valued at $700.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft from a Motor Vehicle

9-26-01 - A vehicle parked in the Alumni Gymnasium parking lot was broken into. The driver's side front window was broken, and an Alpine CD player was taken. Damage to the window was estimated at $100.00. The CD player was valued at $250.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded to further investigate the scene.

9-26-01 - Another vehicle parked in the Alumni Gymnasium parking lot was broken into. Both windows on the driver's side were broken. Taken from the vehicle was a SAS Bazooka sub woofer valued at $300.00, and a remote to a CD player valued at $45.00. The replacement cost for the windows is estimated at $170.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-26-01 - A vehicle parked on Central Avenue by the football field bleachers was broken into. The front passenger side window was broken. Damage was done to the stereo as well as the dashboard. Two hundred CD's valued at $2,400.00 were taken, and a $55.00 CD case. Damage to the window was estimated at $75.00. It was unknown what the monetary damage to the dashboard was. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-27-01 - A vehicle parked in the Merrill Gymnasium parking lot was broken into. The driver's side window was shattered, and a radio stolen. The Sony AM/FM, Compact Disc player was valued at $200.00. Also missing was $10.00 in cash taken from a coin container. Damage to the window was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-23-01 - A screen in the lounge at Parker Hall was damaged. It will cost approximately $64.38 to repair the screen. No on was in the areas at the time.

9-24-01 - Some writing was found on an air conditioning unit at Pettigrew Hall. There were no identifiable words. The Physical Plant was able to remove the lettering.

9-27-01 - A glass to the main entrance door at Hacker House was broken. Also broken was the glass in the door to the basement. The total cost to replace the windows is approximately $379.24. The house will be charged for the damage.

9-29-01 - A window was broken at a private residence on Frye Street. A golf ball was found inside near the window. Five other golf balls were also found out on the lawn. The value of the window was approximately $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-29-01- A student at Whittier House reported that the screen in her room was torn above the latch. The value of the screen is $64.38.

10-01-01 - A water fire extinguisher was found on the rear porch of Hacker House. The house will be charged the $2.00 refill fee as well as the $75.00 Life Safety Fine for tampering with life safety equipment.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

9-23-01 - A student reported that while his car was parked on the corner of Oak and Frye Streets the passenger side mirror was damaged. Approximately $50.00 in damage was done. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-24-01 - A student reported the front passenger window to his vehicle was broken while it was parked on the corner of Central Avenue and Russell Street. The window was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-05-01 - The Bates College Security Van, while parked at the Security Office, had eggs thrown at it. No damage was done to the vehicle. The egg was washed off.
