Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between September 22, 2002 and October 5, 2002.

Assults

9-22-02 - A student who was attending a dance at the Gray Cage reported that he was assaulted by a male student in the men's' room. The male placed his hands around the student's neck in a forceful manner. Bates Security was unable to locate suspect.

9-22-02 - A student was evaluated at St. Mary's Hospital for injuries he suffered when another student punched him in the face at an off campus location. No charges were filed but the students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-29-02 - A student received four stitches at the corner of his eye when he was punched by another student at an off campus location. The student did not press charges. The incident was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-4-02 - A student was assaulted by two students who followed him home from an off campus location on the porch of Webb House. The assault was the continuation of encounter at the off campus location. The student was evaluated at St. Mary's Hospital for a possible broken nose. No charges were filed but the students involved were referred to the Dean of Student's Office.


Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

9-24-02 - A student at Hacker House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the campus hard liquor policy.

9-27-02 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of alcohol in the game room at Chase Hall.

9-28-02 - A student at Parker Hall was referred the Dean of Students Office for possession of a bottle of hard liquor.

9-28-02 - A student at Village Three was found in violation of the alcohol blue slip policy. Two kegs of beer and a tap were confiscated.

9-28-02 - A student at Village Three was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a non-blue slipped keg. The keg and a tap were confiscated.

9-29-02 - Two students was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard liquor at an alcohol free dance at the Gray Cage.


Drug Related Violations

9-24-02 - A two foot water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana and four grams of marijuana were confiscated from a student at Hacker House. The Lewiston Police Department responded and the student was issued a summons for possession of marijuana. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-29-02 - A glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was confiscated from a student at Smith Hall. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-29-02 - Three glass pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana were confiscated along with a small amount of marijuana from a student at Wilson House. The Lewiston Police Department responded and confiscated the marijuana and some seeds and stems. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Weapons

9-25-02 - Two pellets guns were turned over to Security by residents at Hedge Hall. The Dean of Students Office due to the students voluntarily turning in the guns took no action. The guns will not be returned to the owners.

9-28-02 - A pellet gun was confiscated from a common area in Village Three. The owner of the gun was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

9-24-02 - A student at Wilson House reported the theft of his guitar from his room. One door to the room was not locked. The Seagull Guitar was valued at $275.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

9-29-02 - A student reported the theft of her purse while attending a dance at the Gray Cage. The multi-colored bag was valued at $20.00. The missing bag contained credit cards, kegs, a Nokia cell phone, and a wallet containing approximately $30.00.

UPDATE
9-30-02 - The student's purse was turned into Security and returned to the student. Her wallet and all of its contents were also found. The only item that remained missing is the Nokia cell phone valued at $99.00.

9-29-02 - A student reported the theft of her Kodak Advantix Camera from a dance at the Gray Cage. The camera was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-29-02 - A visitor reported the theft of a sweater belonging to his brother while attending a dance at the Gray Cage. The only information given was that the sweater was red.


Bicycle Theft

9-23-02 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from outside Chase Hall. The silver twenty-one-speed L.L. Bean Evolution bike was valued at $500.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-05-02 - A student reported the theft of his black Jamis mountain bike from the inside stairwell of Parker Hall. The bike was not locked. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-22-02 - Two broken windows were observed on a vacant College owned building at 11 Frye Street. The cost to replace the windows is $399.20.

9-22-02 - A student reported that the screen to his room located on the first floor at John Bertram Hall was damaged. Students often knock on the complainant's window to be let into the dorm. Damage to the screen was estimated at $67.59. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-28-02 - Global Security reported a broken screen on another first floor window at John Bertram Hall. The student who resides in the room admitted to breaking the screen to gain entry to his room. He will be charged $64.38 for the screen repair.

9-29-02 - A student reported criminal mischief to his computer. He claimed that another student threw several beers at his $2,500.00 computer. No formal complaint at this time has been made with the Lewiston Police Department.

10-02-02 - Global Security reported that a screen was missing from the window to Parker Lounge. The cost to replace the screen is $67.59.
