Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between August 26, and September 8, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

9-05-01 - Students were reported drinking at the Activities Fair on the lower Ladd Terrace. A Dean in attendance confiscated a beer from a female student. Security stayed in the area until the event was over, and no other incidents involving alcohol were observed.

9-05-01 - Two students at Small House were observed through an opened door drinking hard alcohol. Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated. The students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-06-01 - Students were observed drinking outside of Chase House by Security. A keg of beer was discovered in a recycling bin in the kitchen. The keg was confiscated by Security. The Dean of Students' Office was made aware of this incident.

9-06-01 - Students were seen drinking outside of John Bertram Hall by Security. A keg of beer was discovered in the handicap bathroom on the first floor. The keg and tap were confiscated. The Dean of Students' Office was advised of the incident.

9-07-01 - While unpropping the door at Frye House, Security heard yelling coming from the basement. Students were standing around a keg of beer which had not been blue-slipped. The keg and tap were confiscated. The Dean of Students' Office was advised of the incident.

9-07-01 - While on patrol on Frye Street, Security observed a large group of students in the rear of Webb House. A keg of beer and a tap were located in the basement. The keg and tap were confiscated. The Dean of Students' Office was advised of the incident.

9-07-01 - A student at John Bertram was observed with a bottle of hard liquor in his possession. The bottle was confiscated and emptied. The student was referred to the Dean of Students' Office.

9-08-01 - A large group of students were seen outside of Frye House. Two empty kegs were found in the basement. The kegs were confiscated. The Dean of Students' Office was advised of the incident.

9-08-01 - A blue-slipped event held at John Bertram Hall was found by Security to be in violation of numerous blue-slip rules. The party was dispersed, and two kegs of beer and two taps were confiscated. As the students left the party, many were in the group were loud and carrying open containers of alcohol as they walked down Campus Avenue. Many other students joined this group as they made their way across campus. The Lewiston Police Department was called in to assist Security in quelling the disturbance. Three students were arrested as a result. The Dean of Students' Office was advised of this incident.

9-08-01 - A student was issued a summons for a minor being in possession of alcohol by the Lewiston Police Department on Campus Avenue. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students' Office.


Assault

9-06-01 - Security responded to a report of a fight on Frye Street. Two Lewiston residents were surrounded by about five Bates students. When Security separated the two groups, they observed that one of the students had a laceration over his eye. Both groups gave conflicting stories, and neither wanted to press charges. The Bates student was treated at the scene by Bates EMS. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Hate Incident

9-04-01 - It was reported to Security that for two nights a small, dark pick-up truck with two subjects in the cab, and two or three subjects in the bed was driving through campus yelling homophobic, and other offensive remarks at students. A Security Alert was issued, and a copy of the report was forwarded to the Attorney's General Office in Augusta.


Theft

9-04-01 - A student reported that items he stored in the Parker Hall storage room were stolen over the summer. Missing was a two foot end table valued at $15.00, a brown apartment sized refrigerator valued at $75.00, and a two piece couch valued at $50.00. The total value of the missing items is $140.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-05-01 - Information Services reported the theft of ten mouse balls from MAC Apple computers at Treat Gallery in Pettigrew Hall. They were valued at $1.25 apiece for a total value of $12.50.

9-05-01 - A white apartment sized refrigerator was reported stolen from the storage room at Milliken House sometime over the summer. The refrigerator was valued at $120.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

8-27-01 - A student reported that her locked bike was stolen from the outside bike rack at Roger Williams Hall. The Ironhorse, Journey dark blue 21 speed bike was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-04-01 - A student reported that his locked blue Trek 930 bike was stolen from the bike rack outside of Wentworth Adams Hall. The bike was valued at $750.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-04-01 - Another locked bike was reported stolen from the bike rack at Wentworth Adams Hall. The yellow Giant GT 21 speed bike was valued at $1,400.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-06-01 - A bike locked to the bike rack in front of Roger Williams Hall was reported stolen. The dark blue 21 speed Trek Expedition was valued at $250.00.

9-06-01 - A bike locked to the bike rack on the side of Chase Hall was stolen. The royal blue Sorento Mountain 21 speed was valued at $250.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-07-01 - A silver/blue 10 speed Huffy Alumina 8000 mountain bike was stolen from the front bike rack at Roger Williams Hall. The bike was valued at $125.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-07-01 - A locked bike at Wentworth Adams Hall was reported stolen. The silver/red Trek mountain bike was valued at $450.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-08-01 - A bike that was secured to the porch at Parker Hall was reported stolen. The blue Mongoose BMX model was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-05-01 - The front door to Village Two was shattered. No one was in the area when Security was called to investigate. The damage was estimated to be about $150.00.

9-08-01 - A student reported that a beer can was thrown through his screen causing damage to the screen and the window shade. Damage was estimated to be around $65.00.
