Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between August 25, 2002 and September 7, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

8-28-02 - A bottle of hard liquor was found inside the entrance of Webb House. No was in the area at the time.

9-04-02 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for selling beer from his room. Security confiscated 34 cans of beer.

9-06-02 - Three bottles of hard alcohol were confiscated from Small House. The student who claimed ownership was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-07-02 - Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated from a room at Wentworth Adams. The resident of the room was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violation of the hard liquor policy.

9-07-02 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in a common area at Moody House. The student who claimed ownership was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Drug Related Violations

8-26-02 - A student was issued a verbal warning for possession of narcotics by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

8-26-02 - A staff person at Special Projects reported the theft of $60.00 in cash from an unlocked desk drawer. The office is kept locked when no one is in the office. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

8-26-02 - Another employee at Special Projects reported the theft of a roll of thirty-seven cent stamps from her desk. The stamps valued at $37.00 were kept in an unlocked drawer. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

8-29-02 - The custodian at Hacker House reported the theft of a microwave and a toaster oven from the kitchen at Hacker House. The Whirlpool microwave was valued at $200.00, and the Black and Decker toaster oven was valued at $40.00. The two items are property of Bates College. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

8-27-02 - A student who was employed at Lane Hall reported the theft of $100.00 in twenties from his desk in a suite at Lane Hall. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

8-29-02 - A student at Smith Hall South reported that his bike was stolen from the bike rack outside of Smith Middle. The locked bike was described as a royal blue 24 speeds Accent Ex, Diamondback mountain bike. It was valued between $400.00 and $500.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

8-30-02 - A student at Smith Hall South reported the theft of his locked bike from the bike rack at Smith Hall. The black and yellow Specialized Rockhopper was valued at $700.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
9-02-02 - The above bike was recovered by the Lewiston Police Department. The owner was notified.

9-04-02 - A student at Page Hall reported the theft of his $400.00 blue Proflex mountain bike. The bike was locked at the bike rack at Page Hall. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-04-02 - A student reported the theft of his bike that was locked to the bike rack in the rear of Milliken House. The red Giant 18 speed was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-07-02 - A chandelier at Parsons House was damaged during a blue-slipped alcohol event. The three students who were in charge of the event will be held responsible for the $183.84 replacement cost of the chandelier.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

8-26-02 - A vehicle parked on Franklin Street had its passenger side window broken by an object. Damage to the window was estimated at $75.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Safety Tips

Please remember to register your bikes with Security. Also, make sure your bike is locked when not in use.

Do not leave outside doors to dorms and houses propped open for your safety and the safety of others. Please carry your keys and BatesCard with you at all times.
