Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between June 3 , and June 16, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

6-03-01 - While responding to a lockout at Parker Hall, a bottle of hard liquor was found in the lounge. There were no students in the area. The bottle was confiscated.

6-16-01 - A student at Milliken House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a bottle of hard liquor. The bottle was confiscated.

6-16-01 - A second student at Milliken House was also referred to the Dean of Students for possessing a bottle of hard liquor. The bottle was confiscated.


Narcotics Laws

6-12-01 - A water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was found in a hallway at Village One. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscated the pipe.


Burglary

6-06-01 - A student at Rand Hall reported that his room was burglarized. The room may have been entered from an unlocked window in the studentıs room or an open window in the hall. Stolen were a black pair of Oakley sunglasses valued at $70.00, two portable compact disc players valued at $200.00, a Vivitar 35mm camera valued at $100.00, a bag valued at $20.00, an olive double vested suit valued at $200.00, and several tee shirts and polo shirts valued at $100.00. The total value of the missing items was $690.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

6-07-01 - While on patrol Security noticed that some graffiti was written at Rand Hall on the back door, and a basement window. A basement screen was also removed, and a window found open. The Lewiston Police Department was called to assist Security in checking the building. It was concluded that entry was made into the building through the basement window. No one was found in the building. It is unknown whether any items were missing from the rooms, because the students have left campus for the summer. The studentsı storage room door was found unlocked and had about $280.00 worth of damage done to it. Again, it is unknown whether any items were taken from the storage area. A full report was taken by Security and the Lewiston Police Department.


Theft

6-05-01 - A student reported the theft of his backpack and four books he had left on a desk in Treat Gallery. The black and silver Eastpack backpack was valued at $25.00. The four soft covered books were: Darwinıs Dangerous Idea valued at$30.00, Brain Children valued at $30.00, Functionalism Language and Thought valued at $20.00, and Concepts in Evaluating Biology valued at $35.00. The total value of the missing items is $140.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

6-07-01 - A student reported the theft of his bike from the bike rack outside of Wentworth Adams Hall. The blue Brittany Free Spirit 12 speed touring bike was valued at $100.00. The lock was valued at $10.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: The student advised Security that his bike had been found. The custodian at Wentworth Adams noticed that someone had tampered with the bike lock, so he took the bike inside into his office for safe keeping.

6-16-01 - A student reported that his locked bike had been stolen from the light post of Central Avenue walkway. The blue Schwinn, MOAB model, was valued at $750.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft from Motor Vehicle

6-05-01 - A student reported the theft of her car battery while her vehicle was parked near Security. The WalMart brand battery was valued at $60.00. The vehicle was locked and no other damage was done. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

6-03-01 - While on patrol in the rear of Commons, Security noticed a golf cart on its side. There appeared to be no damage done to the cart.

6-03-01 - Approximately an hour and a half after the above incident was reported, all the golf carts located at the rear of Commons were found on their sides. It was unknown whether any of the vehicles sustained any damage.

6-04-01 - A student reported that graffiti was written in several locations at Roger Williams Hall. The custodian was able to remove all the writing.

6-07-01 - While on patrol, Security observed a cut screen and an open window on the ground floor of Herrick House. There was no one in the house, and all doors and windows were found closed. Damage to the screen was estimated at $25.00.


Criminal Mischief to Motor Vehicle

6-05-01 - A studentıs vehicle parked in the Alumni Gym Lot had its windshield smashed with a blunt object. Damage to the windshield was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
