Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between May 8, 2005 and May 21, 2005.

Security Information

05-14-05 - Three males approached two students while they were walking on Nichols Street. One of the males showed a knife and challenged the students to a fight. The students refused to fight and entered the residence of 53 Nichols Street and called the Lewiston Police. Two of the males were described as Caucasians with one of the individuals having a shaved head. The other male was described as African American wearing a bandana on his head. All three individuals were in their late teens.

05-17-05 - A student reported to Security and Campus Safety that she was assaulted by three males on a side street south of Sabattus Street. The student stated that while she was walking, a motor vehicle approached her and the three males inside the vehicle began to taunt her. The three males exited the vehicle and continued to taunt the student while one of the males showed a small knife. The three males knocked the student down to the ground and left the area. The Lewiston Police is investigating the incident.


Assault

05-14-05 - A student reported to Security and Campus Safety that three male students outside of Rand Hall confronted him. The students followed him and harassed him as he walked down College Street. The three students then surrounded him, knocking his cell phone that he was holding from his hand to the ground. One of the students grabbed him by his shirt and held him against a car. The student yelled at him and then released him.


Theft

05-15-05 - Two visitors were observed getting into a college golf cart, that was parked in front of Security and Campus Safety and driving the golf cart towards the Quad. The two individuals left the golf cart in the Quad and fled behind Rand Hall. The individuals were located and issued criminal trespass warnings.

05-19-05 - A student reported that her Apple I-pod was taken from the pocket of her jacket while it was left in the Coat Room of Chase Hall. The value of the I-pod is $400.00.


Bicycle Theft

05-19-05 - A resident of Roger Williams Hall reported that his mountain bike was taken from the basement of Roger Williams.


Narcotics Laws

05-12-05 - A resident of Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of Narcotics Laws.

05-18-05 - A resident of Chase House was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of Narcotics Laws.


Liquor Laws

05-10-05 - A resident of Moody House was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.

05-18-05 - A resident of Chase House was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.


Liquor Policy

05-10-05 - A resident of Moody House was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the Liquor Policy.

05-12-05 - Three residents of Moody House were referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the Liquor Policy.

05-12-05 - A student was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the Liquor Policy.


Criminal Trespass

05-15-05 - Two youths from the Lewiston area were issued criminal trespass warnings.


Fire Alarm Activation

05-20-05 - Officers went to a room in Wentworth Adams Hall for a fire alarm activation. When they arrived, the room was filled with dark smoke. One of the Officers entered the room on his hands and knees and located two students sleeping. The Officer woke the students up and assisted them in exiting the room. The Lewiston Fire Department put out the small fire, which started from burning candles.


Neighborhood Complaint

05-08-05 - The Lewiston Police Department dispersed a large party from 26 White Street at the request of the residents. The incident took place at 12:24 a.m.

05-10-05 - The residents of 26 White Street received a disorderly conduct warning from the Lewiston Police Department at 4:19 a.m.

05-12-05 - The Lewiston Police Department issued disorderly conduct warnings to the residents of 410 Main Street after receiving complaints about the noise level. The incident took place at 12:50 a.m.

05-14-05 - The Lewiston Police Department spoke to the resident of 64 Nichols Street in reference to the loud noise complaint that they received from a neighbor.

05-15-05 - The Lewiston Police Department issued a disorderly conduct warning to the residents of 70 Elm Street in reference to a noise complaint. The incident took place at 1:39 a.m.
