Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between May 6 , and May 19, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

5-06-01 - A student at Hedge Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the hard liquor policy. A bottle of hard liquor was confiscated.

5-07-01 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue- slipped party at Frye House. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-07-01 - While asking students to leave a party at Frye House, Security noticed a bottle of hard liquor on a table. No one claimed ownership. The bottle was emptied and confiscated.

5-10-01 - Security confiscated a bottle of hard liquor found in the bushes outside Wentworth Adams. There were no students in the area at the time.

5-11-01 - Security confiscated a bottle of hard liquor from the kitchen at Rand Hall. No one was in the area at the time.

5-15-01 - While checking on loud music coming from Small House, Security discovered a non blue- slipped party. A keg was located behind Frye House. The keg was confiscated. A student from Small House was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-16-01 - While unpropping the front door at Parsons House, Security noticed that a party had taken place. An empty keg of beer was found in the basement. No one was around at the time. The keg was confiscated.

5-17-01 - A large group of students were found drinking mixed drinks in the basement of Moulton House. A common source container of alcohol was located and disposed of by Security.

5-19-01 - When Security went to Parsons House to check on fire works that had been set off, they discovered two kegs of beer, and a tap. The kegs and tap were confiscated.

5-19-01 - While checking on broken windows at Moulton House, Security discovered a recycle bin filled with beer cans and empty hard liquor bottles. There were no students in the area. The bottles were confiscated.

5-19-01 - An empty bottle of hard liquor was found under the front steps of Hayes House. The bottle was confiscated by Security. There were no students in the area.


Narcotics Laws

5-08-01 - While checking on the well being of a student at Parker Hall, Security found a ceramic water pipe. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate the pipe. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Arson

5-19-01 - A student reported to Security that smoke was coming out of the mailbox located behind Lane Hall. The Lewiston Fire Department along with Security responded. The Postmaster of Lewiston was called in as well as the Director of Bates Print and Mail Services. A partially melted plastic mail tub was found inside the box and two pieces of mail. A Postal Investigator is to following-up on the incident. At this time it is not known the amount of damage done to the mailbox. The Lewiston Police Department also took a report.


Theft

5-07-01 - An envelope containing approximately $350.00 worth of Flagship Cinema tickets and $100.00 in cash was stolen from the patrol room in Security. The Lewiston Police Department and Security are investigating.

5-10-01 - An art portfolio was stolen from the storage room in the lower level of Olin Arts Center. The ten by fourteen inch accordion type portfolio contained an artistıs book and sixteen drawings. The art was valued at $7,850.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded to Olin along with Security to take the report. The incident has been turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lewiston Police Department.

5-12-01 - A staff member working at Commons reported that a male was seen leaving the stockroom in the rear of Commons with a paper bag full of goods. At this time it was unknown what was taken and the value of the items. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-14-01 - A student reported that his black Hartman portfolio was stolen from Treat Gallery. It was valued at $250.00. The portfolio contained personal papers and $100.00 in cash. The total value of the stolen property was $350.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-16-01 - A male reported that $45.00 was stolen from an unlocked locker in the Menıs Locker Room at Merrill Gym. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-17-01 - A student reported the theft of his cellular telephone from his room at Page Hall. The black Motorola Startek was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-17-01 - A Sony LCD projector was reported stolen from room B 21 at Carnegie Science. The projector was mounted on the ceiling. The projector was valued at $3,895.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

5-17-01 - A staff member reported the theft of his bicycle from College owned property. The unlocked bike was stolen from the first floor hallway of 203 College Street. Stolen was a gray Mongoose Threshold 30 speed mountain bike. The bike was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-18-01 - An unlocked bicycle was reported stolen from Webb House. The yellow and white Trek mountain bike was valued at $500.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

5-07-01 - A student at Hacker House reported that his door had been kicked in. The estimated cost to repair the door is $100.00.

5-07-01 - A student at Hacker House reported that a group of individuals broke his storm and inside window with BB pellets. The estimated cost to repair the windows is $150.00.

5-08-01 - Physical Plant reported that one of the front steps at Pierce House had been burnt by hot coals from a barbecue grill. A small grill was located on the front porch. The approximate cost to replace the step is $25.00. The house will be charged for the damage.

5-09-01 - A student from Smith Hall was observed by Security breaking a limb off a tree in front of Hedge Hall. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-11-01 - While on patrol Security noticed trash cans outside of Rand Hall. When they went inside, they found the remains of a party in the ground floor kitchen. A hole was noticed in the wall near the bathrooms. The cost to repair the hole is approximately $25.00. It was not known what the cost would be to clean up the kitchen area. The hall will be charged for the damage and clean-up.

05-12-01 - While on a lock-out at the Canoe Barn on Frye Street, Security noticed a hole in the door. The on call carpenter was called in to board up the door. The cost to fix the door is estimated at $50.00.

5-15-01 - The plexiglass to the ³mouthpiece² located in front of Hathorn Hall was shattered. It appeared that someone might have fallen into it. The estimated cost to repair the glass is $50.00.

5-17-01 - Security responded to Parker Hall to check the elevator phone after a call came into Security dispatch. There was no one in the elevator. The officer noticed that the plastic ceiling grates were smashed, and beer had been poured all over the floor. The cost to replace the grates is estimated to be $30.00. The hall will be assessed that charge.

5-17-01 - A student at Parker Hall was observed by Security damaging the wall in the fourth floor hallway. Total value of the damage done was approximately $48.00. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-18-01 - A five pound chemical fire extinguisher was found tampered with in the basement area of Moulton House. The house will be charged the $7.00 refill fee along with the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-18-01 - A ten pound chemical fire extinguisher was found discharged on the first floor of Rand Hall. The hall will be charged the $10.50 refill fee along with the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-19-01 - While doing phone checks at Moulton House two broken windows were discovered. The on call carpenter was called in to repair the windows. There is no estimate of damage at this time.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

5-10-01 - A student reported that her vehicle was damaged while it was parked on Central Avenue. A long deep scratch was observed on the driverıs side door, and continuing along the rear passenger door. Damage was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-17-01 - The Bates College EMS vehicle received about $200.00 damage to the left front fender. There was no foreign paint or scratches to indicate that it had been hit by another vehicle. There was some dirt noticeable that could have been from someone kicking the fender. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
