Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between May 20, and June 2, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

5-20-01 - While responding to a noise complaint at Rand Hall, Security found a keg of beer and a tap in the hallway. These items were confiscated. No one was in the area at the time.

5-20-01 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the hard liquor policy. A bottle of hard liquor was confiscated.

5-22-01 - A keg of beer and tap were confiscated from a recycling bin in the basement of Moulton House. There was no one around at the time.

5-22-01 - A student was issued a summons by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of alcohol by a minor at the corner of Holland Street and College Street. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-23-01 - While unpropping the front doors of Herrick House, Security heard loud music coming from the basement. Two empty kegs and one tap were found in the basement. No one in the area claimed ownership. The kegs and tap were confiscated.

5-23-01 - While unpropping the front doors to Hacker House, juice and a bottle of hard liquor were found in the lounge. There were no students in the area. The empty hard liquor bottle was confiscated.

5-23-01 - Security, while on patrol on Frye Street, discovered three empty bottles of hard liquor in the basement of Moulton House. No students were in the area. The bottles were confiscated.

5-24-01 - An empty keg of beer was found in the ground floor kitchen area of Smith Hall. There were no students in the area. The keg was confiscated.

5-25-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in the basement of Milliken house. It was confiscated by Security.

5-25-01 - A full keg of beer was discovered in the lounge of Small House. No students in the area claimed ownership. The keg was confiscated.

5-25-01 - A full keg and one empty keg were discovered in a room at John Bertram Hall. The two students who reside in the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office. The kegs were confiscated.

5-25-01 - An empty keg of beer was found in the fourth floor menšs room at Village One. There were no students in the area. The keg was confiscated.

5-26-01 - Two kegs of beer were confiscated from a room at Hacker House. The two students who reside there were referred to the Dean of Students Office. The kegs were confiscated.

5-27-01 - An empty keg of beer was confiscated from the basement of Herrick House. No one in the area claimed ownership.

5-29-01 - Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated from the lounge area of Moulton House. One student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-30-01 - Two bottles of hard liquor and a keg of beer were found in a room at Turner House. The three students in the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office. The keg and hard liquor bottles were confiscated.

5-30-01 - A full keg of beer was confiscated from the basement of Herrick House. None of the students in the area claimed ownership of the keg.

5-30-01 - Security discovered a keg of beer and a tap in a room at Moody House while on a noise complaint. The two students in the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office. The keg and tap were confiscated.

5-30-01 - A keg of beer and tap were discovered in a room at Rand Hall. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office. The keg and tap were confiscated.

6-1-01 - Two bottles of hard liquor were confiscated from a room at Small House. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office. The bottles were confiscated.

6-1-01 - A student was seen leaving Clason House with a bottle of hard liquor. The bottle was confiscated and the student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

6-1-01 - A second student was also seen leaving Clason House with a bottle of hard liquor. The bottle was confiscated and the student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Narcotics Laws

5-24-01 - A glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was found at Small House while Security was dispersing a large party. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate the pipe.

5-30-01 - While unpropping the front doors at Wilson House, a glass pipe was found in the kitchen. No students were in the area. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate the pipe.

6-2-01 - A student at Rand Hall was observed through an open door to be in possession of a twelve inch water pipe used to smoke marijuana and a small amount of marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department responded and confiscated the paraphernalia and marijuana. The student was issued a warning by the Police Department and was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

5-21-01 - A student at Frye House reported that he found the door to his room ajar when he returned to campus after being away for the weekend. The door had been kicked open and damage done to the door frame and lock. Missing from his desk draw was a prescription drug that contained thirty pills. The pills were valued at $30.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded to Frye House to take a report.


 

Arson

5-21-01 - An unattended barbecue grill located in front of Hedge Hall was found smoldering. Newspapers, and notebooks were on top of the grill, and had not yet started to fully ignite. Security was able to get two water fire extinguishers from Hedge Hall and douse the grill completely. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

6-1-01 - Two visitors to Bates College were observed by Security spraying lighter fluid on a cardboard box and a piece of plywood on the side of Hacker House. The Lewiston Fire Department was called, but Security was able to extinguish the fire. The Lewiston Police Department was also called because the visitors would not cooperate with Security. The two subjects were eventually escorted from campus by the Lewiston Police Department to a local motel for the night.


Theft

5-20-01 - Dominošs Pizza reported the theft of a pizza while making a delivery at Moody House. Two students were found eating a pizza inside the door of Moody House when Security went over to investigate the incident. The students admitted they had taken the pizza and restitution was made to Dominošs. No charges were filed. The students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-29-01 - Two black bags left unattended in the Chase Hall lounge were reported stolen. The first black bag was canvas with a silver reflector and was valued at $20.00. The bag contained an IBM laptop computer with a fourteen inch screen valued at $2,500.00. The second smaller black bag was also canvas and valued at $15.00. This bag contained $37.00 in cash, a BatesCard valued at $10.00, dorm keys valued at $20.00, and a blank check in the amount $100.00. The total of the stolen items is $2602.00 not including the $100.00 check. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-29-01 - A student reported the theft of $83.00 from her purse in Room 309 of Pettengill Hall. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-30-01 - A staff member of Information Services reported that ten Apple Desktop balls were removed from various mouses at Treat Gallery located at Pettigrew Hall. All the mouses must be replaced. They are valued at $22.00 apiece for a total of $220.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-31-01 - A student reported the theft of his backpack from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The red Northface backpack was valued at $60.00. The following textbooks were inside the backpack: Instructor to Accounting, valued at $50.00, two Microeconomic books, valued at $120.00, Developmental Psychology, valued at $50.00, Environmental Biology, valued at $40.00, and four other textbooks, valued at $60.00. The total value of the stolen items is $320.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified

5-31-01 - A microphone, a cable, and a Matrix decoder box were stolen from Room 210 at Olin Concert Hall. At this time no value has been given to the missing items. When this information is available, a copy of the report will be given to the Lewiston Police Department.

6-1-01 - A student reported a theft from the coatroom at Chase Hall. Taken was a black Messenger bag valued at $60.00 that contained the following items: a Texas Instrument calculator valued at $120.00, two spiral notebooks valued at $2.50 each, and assorted pens valued at $5.00. The total value of the missing items was $190.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

5-21-01 - An unlocked bike left at the outside bike rack at John Bertram Hall was reported stolen. The purple Huffy Titanium womenšs ten speed was valued at $50.00. Also taken was a Kryptonite lock that was attached to the bike and not in use, valued at $15.00. The total value of the missing items was $65.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: Security located the missing bike at John Bertram Hall while doing a routine follow-up to the incident. The complainant and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

5-22-01 - A bike was reported stolen from side of Alumni Gymnasium. The blue Giant 21 speed mountain bike was valued at $250.00. The incident was reported to the Lewiston Police Department.

5-27-01 - An unlocked bike was taken from the porch of Webb House. The bike was a yellow Trek 7000. The complainant stated that he had seen a white male take the bike. The Lewiston Police Department was contacted, but were unable to locate the suspect or the bike. No other information on the bike was available. The incident was reported by a friend of the bike owner.

5-30-01 - A student reported the theft of her bike from the bike rack in front of Pettengill Hall. The green Trek 820 mountain bike was valued at $375.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

5-23-01 - While on patrol, Security found the window to the front door at Webb House broken. The damage was estimated at $100.00. No one was in the area .

5-23-01 - A student reported that while her locked bike was at the bike rack at Page Hall both of the bikešs wheels were dented in. The wheels were valued at approximately $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-24-01 - Two windows by the trash room of Frye House were broken by a student. Damage was $80.00. The student will be charged for the damage, and will also be referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-25-01 - Security discovered two large holes in the wall of Parsons House. The damage was estimated to be $48.00. The house will be charged for this.

5-29-01 - A fire extinguisher was found expelled at Smith Hall North. The $10.50 cost to refill the extinguisher and the $75.00 Life Safety Fine will be assessed to the hall.

5-29-01 - A computer and monitor were smashed by the rear of Herrick House. Due to the possibility of a hazardous substance from the debris, a company from Portland was called in to remove it. At this time there is no estimate to the cost of the computer or the monitor because they were destroyed beyond recognition. The house will be charged approximately $1,000.00 for removal of the hazardous debris.

5-30-01 - The door to the Security phone at the Chapel/Quad was removed. There was no one in the area. No estimate was given for cost to replace the door.

6-1-01 - Approximately $100.00 of damage was done to the fourth floor wall by the elevator at Parker Hall. No one was in the area at the time. The hall will be charged for the damage.

6-1-01 - Security observed a student smash a portion of the railing to Small House. Damage was estimated to be about $75.00. The student will be charged for this, and will be referred to the Dean of Students Office.
