Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between May 19, 2002 and June 1, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

5-20-02 - A non-blue slipped keg of beer was found at Village Two when Security responded to a fire alarm. Three students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-24-02 - Security confiscated a tapped keg of beer that was found in a vacant room at Parker Hall. None of the students in the area claimed ownership.


Drug Related Violations

5-20-02 - A pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was found at Village Two when Security responded to a fire alarm. The pipe was confiscated and three students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-24-02 - A water bong commonly used to smoke marijuana was found in the hallway on the fourth floor of Smith South. There were no students in the area at the time.

5-25-02 - A student at Pierce House was found to have possession of a small amount of marijuana, and a pot pipe. The items were confiscated by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Simple Assault

5-22-02 - A student reported that he was assaulted while he was attending a campus sponsored BBQ on the football field. The student was juggling when another student tackled him from behind. His elbows were bruised from the fall. Two witnesses in the area were able to identify the assailant. The Lewiston Police Department responded.


Burglary

5-22-02 - A student reported the theft of thirteen pairs of underwear from a laundry basket in her room at Moody House. The items were valued at $130.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-23-02 - A student at Smith North reported the theft of his laptop computer from his room. The Toshiba Portege 7020CT was valued at $4,000. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-30-02 - A student from Roger Williams reported the theft of his laptop computer from his room. The Dell Latitude was valued at $400.00. Also, missing from the room was a BB gun valued at $18.00. The total of the missing items is $418.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

5-19-02 - A pewter Chalice was reported stolen from a cabinet at the Chapel. It was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-21-02 - A vending machine owned by New England Vending was found open at Parker Hall with all of the products gone. A representative from the company estimated that $300.00 worth of products and coins were taken from the machine. The machine also sustained about $200.00 in damage to the coin box and assembly. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-21-02 - A student reported the theft of a jacket from the storage area of Wilson House. The storage room is located in the common area and was not locked. The Jack Wolfskin blue and black ski jacket was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-22-02 - A ten-pound chemical fire extinguisher was taken from a hook near the overhead door at the Gray Cage. The replacement cost is $49.40.

5-24-02 - Thirteen packing boxes belonging to the Mailing Center were taken from the game room at Chase Hall. The boxes are described and valued as follows: Two television boxes @ $2.80 Six J17 boxes @ $1.09 Five J50 boxes valued at $1.15. The total value is $17.89. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-28-02 - A student reported the theft of her high school field hockey championship windbreaker. The blue jacket from Taft High School was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-29-02 - A student reported the theft of his luggage from a Rand Hall hallway. The following items were in the luggage: Black walking cane valued at $14.00 Gold and silver tray set valued at $10.00 A blue and yellow blouse and skirt valued at $10.00 A white woolen shawl valued at $10.00 Lotions valued at $5.00 and The large black luggage bag valued at $55.00. The total value of the missing items is $104.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Update: 5-30-02 - The Lewiston Police Department recovered a black bag that belonged to the complainant. Security was unable to make contact with the student as he is out of the country for the summer. The items will be kept at Security until the owner returns to campus.


Bicycle Theft

5-19-02 - A bike locked to the porch at Webb House was reported stolen. The Ross Eurotour was valued at $8.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Update 5-19-02 - The student reported that she found her bike at Smith Hall. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-20-02 - A bike left near the porch at Hayes House was reported stolen. The 1960 black Schwinn was valued at $25.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Update 5-20-02 - The student reported that he had recovered his bike. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-20-02 - A locked bike was taken from the bike rack at Wentworth Adams. The Specialized Hardrock mountain bike was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-22-02 - A student reported the theft of her twenty-one- speed Giant bike from outside Hayes House. It was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-23-02 - A student reported the theft of his locked bike from the bike rack inside Smith Hall. The red and silver Schwinn model MOAB2 was valued at $800.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

5-24-02 - A student reported the theft of his bike from the bike rack at Wentworth Adams. The nine-speed blue Schwinn was valued at $5.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-31-02 - A student reported the theft of his unlocked bike from the basement of Nash House. The eighteen- speed red Specialized Hardrock was valued at $375.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Update 5-22-02 - A red eighteen-speed Peugot bike reported stolen from Hayes House on 5-15-02 was found at Page Hall. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

5-21-02 - A ten-pound chemical fire extinguisher located on the first floor of Rand Hall was discharged and the pin removed. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $10.50. The refill cost plus the $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment will be charged to the Hall.

5-24-02 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for screwing in a piece of plywood to cover a door at Parker Hall. There was no damage to the door.

5-24-02 - Four fire extinguishers at Smith Middle had pins removed. A fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment was assessed in the amount of $75.00 per extinguisher. The total amount charged to the dorm is $300.00.

5-27-02 - An 8x12 inch window at Dana Chemistry was broken when someone threw a small rock through it. The cost to replace the window is $20.00.

5-29-02 - Graffiti was observed on the front side of Underhill Arena by Security. A pentagram and an anarchist symbol were drawn on the building. Maintenance was able to remove the drawings.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

5-05-02 - A student's vehicle parked on the corner of Oak and Frye Streets had its left rear side window broken. No foreign objects were found at the scene, and nothing was taken from the vehicle. Damages were estimated at $400.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-13-02 - A student reported that while his vehicle was parked on College Street by Page Hall a tire was slashed. The cost to replace the tire was $90.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-18-02 - A visitor reported that the left front tire to his vehicle was slashed while it was parked on College Street near the Chapel. The cost to replace the tire was $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
