Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between April 6, 2003 and April 19, 2003.

Liquor Violations

4-12-03 – A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of alcohol by a minor via consumption in front of Hayes House. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

4-12-03 – A student at Hayes House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a “beer making kit” and being under the legal age to possess such a kit. The kit was confiscated by Security.

4-15-03 – A student at John Bertram was referred to the Dean of Students Offices for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. Two bottles were confiscated by Security.


Drug Related Violations

4-13-03 – A non-student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana outside of Roger Williams Hall. He and his companion were also issued one-year criminal trespass warnings.


Simple Assault

4-13-03 – A student reported that a friend who had come to visit him assaulted him. He said he was grabbed by the throat and his head was slammed into a wall. The student was evaluated by United Ambulance but was found not to need any further medical attention. Security did a search of the campus but was unable to locate the visitor. The student declined to press formal charges.


Hate Incident

4-17-03 – The Affirmative Action Office reported that a faculty member received an email with racial overtones. The incident was reported to the Civil Rights Unit of the Attorney General’s Office in Augusta and they are following up on the incident.


Theft

4-12-03 – A student reported the theft of her red backpack from the coatroom at Chase Hall. Her backpack contained clothing as well as personal items. Their estimated value was $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

4-16-03 – A van that was rented by the college received $1,061.22 worth of damage while it was parked on campus. A student threw himself into the vehicle while it was parked. The Dean of Students Office was made aware of this incident and the student will have to make restitution for the damage.
