Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between April 22, and May 5, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

4-26-01 - A keg of beer was found in the trash room at Parker Hall. The keg was confiscated by Security. There were no students present.

4-27-01 - A full bottle of hard liquor was found in the first floor trash room at John Bertram Hall. The bottle was confiscated by Security. There were no students in the immediate area.

5-01-01 - While Security was evacuating Webb House for a fire alarm, they found a half full bottle of hard liquor in the downstairs kitchen. The bottle was confiscated by Security.

5-02-01 - A partially full keg of beer was found in the first floor lounge of Rand Hall. There were no students in the area. The keg was confiscated was Security.

5-02-01 - While removing the keg of beer from Rand Hall in the previous incident, Security observed a student in the hall standing beside an open room. Inside the room were four bottles of hard liquor in plain view. The bottles were emptied and confiscated by Security. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-03-01 - A student was observed by Security at the corner of Central Avenue and Campus Avenue with an open can of beer. He was requested several times to dump the beer before he complied. He was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-03-01 - While assisting the Lewiston Police Department with a noise complaint on Frye Street, Security noticed a large party at Hacker House. Once inside the house Security saw a door to a room open, and several students in the room. Two half full kegs of beer and a tap were found. The kegs and tap were confiscated by Security. The two students who reside in the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-04-01 - While unpropping the front door to Village One, Security observed a partially full bottle of hard liquor on the counter in the lounge. No students were in the area. The bottle was emptied and confiscated by Security.

05-05-01 - While unpropping the rear door at Wilson House, Security noticed several hard liquor bottles in the kitchen. Some bottles were empty, but six still contained alcohol. They were emptied and confiscated by Security. There were no students in the area.


Narcotics Laws

5-01-01 - While trying to locate vehicle owners to move their cars, Security knocked on a door at Frye Street Union. The officer was allowed to enter the room. A glass pipe and a glass water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana were observed. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate these items. The Dean of Students Office was also notified.


Burglary

4-27-01 - A student at Parker Hall reported that a wallet was missing from her unlocked room. There was about $4.00 in cash, a BatesCard, and various other cards in the wallet. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-01-01 - A yogurt machine was stolen from Commons and found in the middle of Frye Street by the Lewiston Police Department. A door behind the loading dock to Commons was found unlocked. Nothing else appeared to be missing. The value of the yogurt machine is listed at $20,000. It is not known at this time what amount of damage was done to the machine. Detectives from the Lewiston Police Department responded and processed the machine, and the Catering Office at Common where the machine was kept for finger prints.

5-01-01 - A garage on Frye Street was also broken into in an attempt to hide the yogurt machine. There was approximately $50.00 of damage done to the garage door. A locksmith had to be called in to secure the garage.

Hate Crime Incidents

5-04-01 - Security spoke to two students at Wood Street House regarding a complaint from a female that they used foul language toward her small children. Upon further investigation it was found that these two small boys for the past couple of weeks had been riding their bikes near the house and yelling bias remarks at the students. The students admitted that they did yell back at the boys. The mother was advised of the situation, and stated she would be speaking to her boys. A copy of this report was sent to the Attorneyıs General Office as well as the Bates Hate Crime/Bias Incident Committee.


Theft

4-27-01 - A coffee table was reported missing from the locked Faculty lounge at 110 Carnegie Science. The light oak table is approximately 4 feet long by 2 feet wide. It is valued at $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

5-01-01 - A HP Hewlett Packard DeskJet black ink cartridge was reported stolen from the Concierge area at Chase Hall. The cartridge was valued at $35.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

4-22-01 - A ten pound dry chemical fire extinguisher was found discharged in the kitchen area of Rand Hall. The hall will be charged $10.50 to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

4-23-01 - A five pound dry chemical fire extinguisher was found discharged in the kitchen at Smith Hall. The hall will be charged for the $7.00 refill, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

4-28-01 - Security while checking security phones found the phone at the Franklin Lot had been tampered with. The cord had been pulled from the base ringer. Damage to the phone was estimated at $5.00. The cord was replaced.

4-30-01 - A fire extinguisher at Hacker House was tampered with. A pin was missing. The house will be charged $75.00 for tampering with Life Safety equipment.

4-30-01 - A water fire extinguisher at Herrick House was found discharged. The house will be charged the $2.00 cost to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-01-01 - About $250.00 in damage was done at Small House. Four spindles had been kicked out of the bannister, and two holes were made in the wall leading down the stairway. Security was unable to locate any of the students responsible for the damage. The house will be assessed the $250.00.

5-01-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was discharged at Milliken House. The house will be charged $10.50 to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-01-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was discharged at Pierce House. The house will be charged $10.50 to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-02-01 - A water fire extinguisher was discharged on the first floor at John Bertram Hall. The hall will be charged $2.00 to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-02-01 - A window was broken, and a screen was torn in a studentıs room at Cheney House. The window was broken by accident, and the student responsible was to contact Physical Plant. The screen located on another window in the room had a tear in it when a stick was thrown by three unknown males. No one matching their description were found in the area. The window was valued at $75.00, and the screen at $25.00.

5-03-01 - Security discovered approximately $200.00 in damage on the first floor at Parker Hall. The screen windows were kicked out, shades were torn down, a hole punched in the wall. The hall will be charged for the damage.

5-03-01 - A water fire extinguisher was discharged on the second floor of Webb House. The house will be charged $2.00 to refill the extinguisher, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

5-04-01 - A pin was removed from a water fire extinguisher on the first floor of Webb House. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $2.00, and the $75.00 Life Safety fine will be charged to the house.

5-05-01 - A garage located between Herrick House and Stillman House had the padlock and lock cradle removed. The garage is used by Physical Plant to store scrap lumber. It was unknown whether any materials were missing.
