Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between April 21, 2002 and May 4, 2002.

Aggravated Assault

4-26-02 - A student at Smith Hall North reported an assault. While he was sleeping another student sprayed Lysol Air Freshener into his ear. The student was treated at a local hospital for second degree burns in his ear canal. The Lewiston Police Department was contacted but the student declined to press charges against the student who was responsible.


Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

4-26-02 - A keg of beer was confiscated from the basement of Hayes House. There were no students in the area.

4-26-02 - A keg of beer was confiscated from a non -blue slipped gathering at Village Three. The owner of the keg was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

5-03-02 - Two bottles of hard alcohol were confiscated from Village Two. The student who claimed owner ship was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

5-02-02 - A student at Frye House reported the theft of his cellular phone from his unlocked room. The Verizon Quantico silver and black phone was valued at $190.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Update

4-27-02 - A Sony Play Station2 reported stolen on 3-22-02 was returned to the owner at Wood Street House by a local male. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Criminal Mischief

4-27-02 - A screen on the first floor at Page Hall was cut. Damage was estimated at $64.38. The occupants of the room will be charged for the damage.

4-28-02 - A student reported holes in a window at 219 Dana Chemistry. Fifteen BB sized holes were found in nine panes of glass. It was determined that the shots originated from Hedge Hall. A student at Hedge Hall took responsibility for the damage. He was charged $1,706.58, and referred to the Dean of Students Office.

4-29-02 - An expelled fire extinguisher was found in kitchen at Hedge Hall. The cost to refill the chemical extinguisher is $10.50. The clean-up cost for the kitchen area was estimated at $35.00, and there's a $75.00 fine for tampering with life safety equipment. The total charged to the dorm is $120.50.

5-01-02 - A student at John Bertram observed two males breaking into the vending machine in the lounge. The door to the vending machine was open, but no forced entry was noted. Security was unable to locate the two males. The contents and the cash from the machine were taken to Security and turned over to the vending company. Nothing appeared to be missing, and no damage was done to the machine.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

4-22-02 - A student reported her passenger side rear window in her vehicle was smashed while it was parked behind Smith Hall. Nothing appeared to be taken. Damage was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police department was notified.

5-03-02 - A student reported that the rear window to her car was broken while it was parked on Central Avenue. Cost to replace the rear window is estimated at $1,000.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
