Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between March 9, 2003 and March 22, 2003.

Liquor Violations

3-9-03 - Two students attending a Lacrosse game at the turf field adjacent to John Bertram were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of alcohol at a non alcohol event and being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. Two plastic cups were confiscated.

3-12-03 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. One bottle of alcohol was confiscated.

3-15-03 - A student from Webb House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard alcohol outside of Parker Hall. A bottle of hard liquor and a 30 pack of beer were confiscated.

3-15-03 - Two students at Village 2 were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard alcohol. Three bottles of hard alcohol were confiscated.

3-15-03 - Two students at Hedge Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in possession of hard alcohol by a common container.

3-20-03 - Two students at Frye House were referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the hard alcohol policy.

3-22-03 - A student at Wilson House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the hard alcohol policy. A bottle of hard alcohol was confiscated.

3-22-03 - A student at Page Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the hard alcohol policy. Two bottles of liquor and approximately twenty-five Jell-O shots were confiscated.

3-22-03 - A student at Page Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in possession of hard alcohol by common container. A five-gallon tub and a bottle of liquor were confiscated.


Drug Related Violations

3-9-03 - Four students from John Bertram were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. They were also fined $75.00 for tampering with a life safety device. A sock was covering the smoke detector. The pipe was confiscated by Security.

3-12-03 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana along with a twelve-inch water pipe and a small amount of marijuana. All items were confiscated by Security.

3-16-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a marijuana cigarette. What remained of the cigarette was confiscated by Security. The resident of the room was also charged a $75.00 fine for tampering with life safety equipment. A sock was observed over the smoke detector.


Weapons Possession

3-19-03 - Two students at Pierce House were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of an air gun. The .24 caliber 6-millimeter aluminum air gun was confiscated by Security.


Hate Incident

3-9-03 - Security investigated homophobic graffiti found in various places at Parsons House. The fire door on the second floor hallway, the second floor custodian's closet, the second floor wall, a mirror on the third floor, and two message boards had graffiti written on them. Most of the graffiti was removed except for the writing on the fire door and a letter on the second floor wall. The messages appeared to be random and not directed to a specific individual. Two holes in the wall were also noticed. One was observed in the first floor lounge and the second in the hallway of the second floor. The total damage done was $160.83. A copy of the report was forwarded to the Bates College Hate Crime-Bias Incident Committee.


Burglary

3-21-03 - A student reported that her car was burglarized while it was parked in the Vale Street parking lot. Taken from the vehicle was a Jensen CD player valued at $130.00. Damage to the dashboard was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-21-03 - A student reported that his vehicle parked in the Wood and Vale Street lot had been entered. An attempt was made to steal the stereo. The stereo valued at $300.00 was broken and no longer usable. Damage to the dashboard was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-21-03 - While investigating the above burglary it was discovered that another vehicle had been broken into. A Panasonic CD player valued at $350.00 was taken. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-22-03 - A student at Rand Hall reported the theft of his skis and poles from the hallway outside his room. The yellow Volki Vertigo-G3" skis were valued at $650.00 while the Scott poles were valued at $25.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Motor Vehicle Theft

3-19-03 - A golf cart belonging to the Physical Plant was stolen from in front of Underhill Arena. Security spotted a vehicle fitting that description in the Pit lot and followed it and stopped it behind the May's Center. Two males not affiliated with the college were arrested by the Lewiston Police Department for the theft.


Theft

3-13-03 - A faculty member of the Athletic Department reported that a sign placed in Chase Hall near the entrance by the Den was taken. The sign was on a tripod and measured 2x3 feet. The white foam board with maroon lettering read "Athletes for Healthy Choices". The sign was valued at $150.00.


Criminal Mischief

3-9-03 - Damage was discovered on the ground, second, and third floors at John Bertram Hall. On the ground level a toilet paper dispenser was ripped off the wall. On the second floor a desk chair was found broken in the hall, and a broken window screen was found on the stairwell. A medium hole was found in the wall on the third floor in addition to several cigarette burns in the rug. Damage was estimate at over $400.00. Still to be determined is the final cost of the carpeting that was just installed during break. The dorm will be charged for all the damage.

3-13-03 - A recliner was discovered on the walkway of Pierce House. The recliner was in pieces. It was unknown how the chair got there. No one in the area heard or saw anything suspicious. No estimate was given for the recliner.

3-14-03 - The glass on the front door of John Bertram was reported broken. Students in the area reported that a student kicking at the glass did the damage. Security was not able to locate the student. Damage was approximately $800.00. Security is following up on this incident.

3-20-03 - Graffiti was discovered on the steps of Chase Hall and an adjacent wall. Other chalkings were also noted in the areas by Hathorn, the library terrace and the walkway by Carnegie. Before all the graffiti was removed Physical Plant was checking to see if any of the chalking had been blue-slipped.

3-18-03 - A student reported that several posters that were hanging in Chase Hall for an upcoming event were damaged. Fifteen legal sized posters valued at $12.00 were damaged and a twelve- foot poster valued at $120.00 was completely torn.

3-22-03 - A window and screen were damaged at Mitchell House. The cost to repair the window is $199.10, and the screen replacement is $67.59. It was unknown who caused the damage.

3-22-03 - A pane of glass was reported missing from a door at John Bertram. The cost to repair the window was estimated at $199.10.
