Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between March 24, 2002 and April 6, 2002.

Sex Offenses

4-05-02 - A female student reported that she was raped in the ground floor women's bathroom of Pettengill Hall. The student stated that she was forced into a stall and raped while the suspect held something to her neck. It is not known what the item was at this time. Bates College Security and the Lewiston Police Department are actively investigating this incident. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Detective Brian O'Malley of the Lewiston Police Department at 795-9000 ext. 230.


Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

3-29-02 - State Liquor Enforcement summonsed two students for Possession of Alcohol by Minors, and arrested one student for Furnishing Alcohol to Minors in the parking lot behind Village 2. All three students were also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-30-02 - Two bottles of hard alcohol were confiscated from the porch of Hacker House. No students in the area claimed ownership.


Drug Related Violations

4-06-02 - A pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was confiscated by Security from a student at Small House. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

3-27-02 - A student at Parker Hall reported the theft of her camera from her room. The Nikon Digital camera was valued at $400.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

4-01-02 - A student at Parker Hall reported the theft of his wallet from his room while he was sleeping. The wallet was valued at $15.00. The wallet contained $60.00 in cash, a BatesCard valued at $10.00, a credit card and a driver's license. Total value of the missing items is $85.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

3-24-02 - A member from a band performing at the College Gala at the Gray Cage reported the theft of his brown leather jacket valued at $300.00. Also, missing was a Nokia cell phone valued at $300.00. The total value of the items missing is $600.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-02 - A student reported the theft of her black EMS fleece jacket and personal items inside the jacket while attending the College Gala at Gray Cage. The jacket was valued at $65.00. The other items included a Ralph Lauren pink sweater valued at $70.00, a blue and tan wallet valued at $5.00, $23.00 in cash, keys valued at $25.00, and various cards. The total value of the missing items is $185.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: On 04-01-02 the student reported that her jacket and personal items were found in the coatroom at Chase Hall.

3-24-02 - A student reported the theft of her dark gray J.C. Crew coat from the Gala at the Gray Cage. The coat was valued at $175.00. A pink coin purse in one of the pockets contained about $40.00 in cash. The total value of the items taken was $205.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-02 - A student reported the theft of her coat while attending the Gala at the Gray Cage. The gray P-coat was valued at $10.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-02 - A vending machine located in the basement of Smith Hall had the front glass shattered and its contents removed. The cashbox was not disturbed. New England Vending Company was notified. It is unknown at this time how much damage was done, and what the total value of the contents was.

3-24-02 - A student attending the Gala at the Gray Cage reported the theft of her purse and its contents. The two- tone black leather/nylon purse was valued at $15.00. The contents included a BatesCard valued at $10.00, a Verizon cell phone valued at $150.00, two keys valued at $20.00, a make-up case valued at $5.00, and lipsticks valued at $6.00. The total value of the missing items is $206.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-25-02 - A student reported the theft of her purse while attending the College Gala at the Gray Cage. The beige Gap purse was valued at $12.00. The purse contained her BatesCard valued at $10.00, and keys valued at $25.00. The total valued of the missing items is $47.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-25-02 - A student reported the theft of her purse from the Gray Cage while attending the Gala. The black leather purse was valued at $30.00. The purse contained her BatesCard valued at $10.00, keys valued at $20.00, a credit card, a driver's license, and an insurance card. The total value of the missing items is $60.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-27-02 - A student reported the theft of her black fleece jacket from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $180.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-29-02 - A pair of jeans valued at $30.00 was reported stolen from Chase Hall. Also taken was about $25.00 in cash, and between $70.00 and $100.00 in Food Stamps from her wallet. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

3-29-02 - A student reported that it appeared that someone walked on her vehicle while it was parked in the Admissions Lot on Wood Street. Scratch marks were observed on the roof, windshield, and hood of the vehicle. The estimated damage is unknown at this time.

3-29-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was expelled in the basement of Webb House. A $7.00 fee to refill the extinguisher will be charged to the dorm along with the $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety equipment.

3-31-02 - The front window at Hacker House was shattered. The student responsible will be charged $705.35 to have the window repaired.

3-31-02 - Damage was done to the third floor men's bathroom at Moody House. A hole was made in the wall. The cost to repair the wall is estimated at $153.18.

4-06-02 - A fire extinguisher located in the basement at Frye Street Union was expelled. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $10.50. This charge and a $75.00 Life Safety fine will be charged to the dorm.


Safety Tips

Remember that tampering with Life Safety Equipment (fire extinguishers) results in a $75.00 fine that is charged to the house or the dorm.
