Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between March 11, and March 24, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

3-11-01 - While investigating a disturbance at Pierce House, Security found a half gallon of hard liquor on the floor in the bathroom. No one claimed ownership of the nearly empty bottle. The bottle was confiscated by Security.

3-13-01 - As Security was checking on a report of criminal mischief at Pierce House, they saw several people by an open room door. A tapped keg of beer was observed in the room. The tap and the keg were confiscated by Security. Security left the area for a short while to check on the criminal mischief complaint, and upon returning to the room only one student remained. The student would not tell the Officer who the keg belonged to, or who else had been in the room. A copy of the report was sent to the Dean of Students Office.

3-15-01 - A first year student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department on Campus Avenue for possession of alcohol by a minor.

3-17-01 - A keg was found in a recycling bin in the basement of Frye House by Security. It was confiscated and taken to Security. No one was in the area at the time.

3-17-01 - While doing routine lockups and phone checks at John Bertram Hall a tapped keg of beer was found in a kitchen trash bin. No one was in the area at the time. The keg and tap were confiscated by Security.

3-18-01 - An empty keg of beer was found in the room of a student at John Bertram Hall. Security confiscated the keg, and reminded the student that he wasnšt allowed to have a keg in his room.

3-19-01 - A keg of beer was found in the laundry room at Hacker House. Security confiscated the keg.


Narcotics Laws

3-17-01 - While Security was investigating the cause of a fire alarm at Frye House, they noted a strong odor of marijuana coming from a room. The smoke detector in that room had also been activated. Four various size pipes were found along with marijuana and opium. The Lewiston Police Department was called, and the student was summonsed for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of a schedule W drug. The items were confiscated by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-18-01 - A glass pot pipe and a water pipe made from a liquor bottle were found in the lounge of Rand Hall. No one in the lounge claimed ownership. The items were turned over to the Lewiston Police Department.


 

Assault

3-17-01 - Security responded to Milliken House for a report of a verbal dispute. Prior to Securityšs arrival a student claimed that he had been pushed and spit on by another student. There have been on going problems with some of the residents at Milliken House. The student refused to file assault charges. Information was turned over to the Dean of Students Office.


Burglary

3-11-01 - A student at John Bertram Hall reported that the door to his room had been kicked in near the lock while he was sleeping. He awoke to hear voices in the suite area. After the subjects left, it appeared that nothing was missing. All his belongings were found in the common area of the suite. Another student had observed the subjects in the area. He recognized them as students, but had no other information.


Hate Incident

3-24-01 - Two males were reported walking in the area of the track yelling obscenities, and racial slurs to students who were on their way to the Gala. They were stopped by Security, and held until the arrival of the Lewiston Police Department. The two subjects were issued Criminal Trespass warnings by the Lewiston Police Department.


Theft

3-14-01 - A yellow Northface backpack valued at $50.00 was reported stolen from the obscenities at Chase Hall. Inside the backpack were 2 notebooks valued at $2.50 each, a Physics lab notebook valued at $45.00, and personal papers Total value of the missing item is $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-19-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was reported missing from the second floor of Frye Street Union. Cost to replace the extinguisher is $40.40, and a $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment will be charged to the house.

3-19-01 - A Dell Optiplex GX1 computer along with a monitor, and keyboard were reported stolen from Treat Gallery. The total value of the items is $1,200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: 3-22-01 - The missing computer was found in a locked storage room at Pettigrew Hall. The computer was moved to the storage room because it could not be locked down properly where it was located. The Lewiston Police Department was also advised.

3-24- 01 - A jacket was reported stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The blue and white Rip Zone jacket was valued at $120.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified

3-24-01 - An L.L. Bean black down jacket was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $80.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A gray American Eagle jacket was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $70.00. Also, in the jacket were keys, $5.00 in cash, a $20.00 scarf and mitten set, and a BatesCard. Total value is approximately $105.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A purple Columbia jacket was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. It was valued at $120.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A three quarter length white leather coat was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. It was valued at $200.00. Also taken was a BatesCard valued at $10.00. Total value is approximately $210.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A student reported that his wallet was taken from his jacket in the Chase Hall coatroom. The black canvas Eaglešs Nest wallet is valued at $10.00. Contents of the wallet included $20.00 in cash, a driveršs license, a credit card, and a BatesCard. The Lewiston Police department was notified.

3-24-01 - A black Searl coat with a lambs wool collar was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The three quarter length coat was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A vending machine located in basement laundry room at Page Hall was broken into. Two students were referred to the Dean of Students for their involvement in this incident. Approximately $5.20 worth of candy was recovered from the students.

3-24-01 - A white jacket was reported stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $40.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A blue stripped Kiplenger bag with a cellphone holder was stolen from the coatroom at Chase Hall. It was valued at $40.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

3-17-01 - A student reported his bike was stolen from the side door area of Chase Hall. The bike was not locked. It was a black 21 speed L.L. Bean Approach with red lettering. The bike was valued at $250.00.

Update: 3-19-01 - The bike was found on the Smith side of the first floor stairwell of Wentworth Adams. The Lewiston Police Department was notified of the recovery.


Theft from Motor Vehicle

3-20-01 - A student reported that while his vehicle was parked on College Street by the Chapel the glove compartment had been opened. His vehicle was left unlocked. Missing was a black Audio Vox 9000CM cell phone. There was no estimate given on the value of the phone. Nothing else was reported missing. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-24-01 - A vehicle parked in the student lot adjacent to Alumni Gym was broken into. The rear windows on the driveršs side were smashed, and a CD player was taken. The estimate to replace the windows is approximately $300.00 The CD player is valued at $350.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded to the scene to take a report.


Criminal Mischief

3-11-01 - Security was called to a reported blood spill at Page Hall. It seems that someone had cut themselves on a cement urn located in the entrance to Page Hall. The urn was broken into several pieces. No one was around at the time. The urn was valued at approximately $75.00. The blood spill team also responded to clean up the area.

3-13-01 - When Security responded to a report of criminal mischief in progress at Pierce House, they discovered over $1,500.00 worth of damage. The damage is as follows:

-Two panes of glass broken and the vinyl casing of the top portion of the window damaged in the lounge area,

-Two holes were knocked into the walls of the lounge area,

-In the foyer to the left of the doorway someone had kicked a hole in the wall

-On the same wall to the right of the doorway 9 to 10 holes had been made with an object that might have been a mop or a broom handle

-The second floor bannister near the top was partially dislodged and

-On the third floor several spindles were removed. Security and the Dean of Students Office are continuing to investigate this incident.

3-15-01 - A screen at Parker Hall was punched out. The screen was located in the second floor trash room. There was no estimate of damage.

3-16-01 - A water fire extinguisher was discharged on the first floor of Smith Hall North. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $2.00 and there is a $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment. Both charges will be assessed to the hall.

3-16-01 - A water fire extinguisher was discharged on the third floor of Hedge Hall. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $2.00 and there is a $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment. Both charges will be assessed to the hall.

3-17-01 - An expelled chemical fire extinguisher was found propping an interior door to the lounge area at Hacker House. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $10.50 and there is a $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment. Both charges will be assessed to the house.

3-19-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled at Alumni Gymnasium. The cost to refill is $10.50 and therešs a $75.00 Life Safety fine. This will be assessed to the responsible party if they are identified.

3-19-01 - Two chemical fire extinguishers were found in the third floor trash room at Wentworth Adams by the custodian. Only one of the extinguishers had been discharged. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $10.50, and therešs a $75.00 Life Safety fine for tampering with safety equipment.

3-19-01 - Three plants at Alumni Gymnasium were knocked down. Damage was estimated at $5.00.


Criminal Mischief to Motor Vehicle

3-11-01 - A vehicle parked at 28 Frye Street received about $100.00 damage. The gas cover had been tampered with, a small dent was made near the gas cover, and the gas cap was missing. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
