Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between March 10 , 2002 and March 23, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

3-15-02 - Four students at Village One were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of three bottles of hard liquor.

3-16-02 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue slipped event at Small House. No students in the area claimed owner ship.

3-16-02 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a keg of beer that had not been blue slipped.

3-21-02 - A student at Smith Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a keg of beer that had not been blue slipped.


Drug Related Violations

3-14-02 - A student at Hayes house was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of two glass pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana. The paraphernalia was confiscated by the Lewiston Police Department.

3-15-02 - Two pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana were confiscated from a student at Smith Hall by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Assault

3-16-02 - A student at Parker Hall reported that two male subjects entered her room in the early morning hours threw food at her and begin to write on her face. Earlier in the evening the student noticed a homophobic word written on a poster that was on her door. It is not known whether the two incidents were related. The Lewiston Police Department and Bates College Security are investigating.


Burglary

3-16-02 - A student at Parker Hall reported the theft of his skateboard from his room. The Blind skateboard was valued at $35.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Hate Incident

3-16-02 - A student at Parker Hall reported that two male subjects entered her room in the early morning hours threw food at her and begin to write on her face. Earlier in the evening the student noticed a homophobic word written on a poster that was on her door. It is not known whether the two incidents were related. The Lewiston Police Department and Bates College Security are investigating.


Theft

3-17-02 - A student reported the theft of his Nautica jacket from Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $130.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

3-18-02 - A beige Dell computer keyboard, was taken from Treat Gallery. It was valued at $50.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

3-20-02 - A student reported the theft of a blue Northface jacket and a black pair of nylon glove liners from the coatroom at Chase Hall. The jacket was valued at $300.00 and the liners at $15.00 for a total of $315.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

3-22-02 - A student at Wood Street House reported the theft of his Sony Play Station 2 from the lounge. The game was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Bicycle Theft

3-10-02 - A bike was stolen from the outside bike rack at Smith Hall. The unlocked bike was a red Maruishi touring bike valued at $25.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

3-15-02 - A Physiofit bike was stolen from in front of Chase Hall. The blue women's bike was valued at $10.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Criminal Mischief

3-10-02 - A fire extinguisher was found expelled in the kitchen at Village Three. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $33.00. The refill cost and a $75.00 Life Safety fine will be charged to the dorm.

3-11-02 - An employee of New England Vending reported that a candy machine located on the first floor of Hedge Hall had been tampered with. A resident of the Hall took responsibility for the damage done. It is unknown at this time the amount of the damage. Security is waiting for a report from New England Vending.


Safety Tips

Now that the warmer weather is approaching, many students will be riding their bikes. Please take the time to register your bike with Security. Also, make sure your bike is locked when not in use.

Do not leave the outside doors to dorms and houses propped open for your safety and the safety of others. Please carry your keys and BatesCard with you at all times.


Security Alert

On April 5, 2002 at approximately 1:00am, a female student reported that she was raped in the ground floor women's bathroom at Pettengill Hall. The student states that she was forced into a stall and raped while the suspect held something to her neck. It is not known what the item was at this time. The suspect is described as follows:

White male - 21 to 22 years of age - 6'3 to 6'4 - possible goatee type facial hair - brown hair approximately one inch in length - wearing a green sweater or sweatshirt - possibly armed

The Lewiston Police Department is actively investigating this incident. There will be increased patrols on and around campus for the immediate future.

Contact Security immediately by dialing 6111 from an on campus phone or by picking up a security phone or contact the Lewiston Police Department by dialing 911 to report any suspicious persons or activity on campus.
