Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between February 9, 2003 and February 22, 2003.

Liquor Violations

2-9-03 - A student at Webb House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for sponsoring a blue-slipped alcohol event and not being present at the event.

2-20-03 - A common source container with alcohol was found in the kitchen of Chase House. Security disposed the contents of the container. No one was in the area.


Drug Related Violations

2-9-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of marijuana and cigarette rolling papers. The marijuana was and the papers were confiscated by Security.

2-20-03 - A student at Wilson House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of marijuana and a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The marijuana and the pipe were confiscated by Security.


Hate Incident

2-20-03 - Security reported that a swastika and a profane exclamation against Jews were written in magic marker on the Mouthpiece (information kiosk) on the Quad. On the opposite side of the Mouthpiece a second profane exclamation against Bates College was written. Copies of the report were sent to the Bates College's Hate Crime-Bias Incident Committee, the Lewiston Police Department, and the Attorney General's Office in Augusta.


Criminal Mischief

2-20-03 - Damage was estimated at $100.00 to the corkboard in the Mouthpiece (information kiosk) at the Quad. This was in relation to the Hate Incident reported above.
