Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between February 25, and March 10, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

3-1-01 - A half empty keg was found in a recycling bin at Rand Hall. The keg was confiscated by Security, and the first year student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-3-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was confiscated by Security from a student walking down the hallway at Page Hall. The contents were emptied, and the student was referred to the Dean of Students for being in violation of the hard liquor ban.

3-8-01 - Two kegs of beer were confiscated from a non blue-slipped party at Frye House. A student who was at one of the kegs was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-9-01 - Two first year students were referred to the Dean of Students for being in possession of a keg of beer by Smith South. First year students under 21, and first year centers cannot have a blue-slip for alcohol events.

3-9-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was taken away from a student at Hacker House by Security. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-10-01 - Security closed down a blue-slipped party at Page Hall when they observed a sign taped to a pot that stated ³Donations Gladly Accepted². The illegal sale of alcohol is a violation. The student with the blue-slip was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Assault

3-5-01 - A student reported that he was assaulted in the lounge at Village One. He claimed another student shoved him causing him to fall. There were no formal charge filed with either Security or the Lewiston Police Department. The Dean of Studentıs Office was advised of this incident.

3-9-01 - An argument between two students at Howard House resulted in a simple assault. Security, the Lewiston Police Department, and the Dean of Students Office responded to Howard House. Restraining orders were obtained by both students. One of the students involved has opted to pursue the matter through the Judicial System, and gave a formal statement to the Lewiston Police Department.


Burglary

3-4-01 - A student at Hedge Hall reported to Security that the door to his room had been kicked in, and items stolen from his room. Taken was a brand new bag of Gold Toe Athletic socks valued at $20.00. It was not known at the time how much the damage to the door would cost to repair. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-4-01 - Another student at Hedge Hall reported that his Sony M2 MIDI player valued at $329.00 was taken from a friendıs room. (See above incident at Hedge Hall.) The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-5-01 - A student at Smith Middle reported that his locked room was entered during break and a radio was stolen. There were no visible signs of forcible entry into the room. The silver Lenox Sound CD/Radio Cassette Recorder had a digital dial on the front and two attached silver speakers. It was valued at $40.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

3-7-01 - A vending machine located in the basement at Parker Hall was smashed and products stolen. The vending machine is owned by All Seasons. The combined damage and missing products is estimated to be approximately $500.00. It is not known who was responsible. The residents at Parker Hall will be charged.


Bicycle Theft

2-28-01 - A student reported the theft of her unlocked bike from the bike rack in front of Chase Hall. The bike was described as a blue 19², 10 speed Schwinn valued at $20.00. The bike was left in front of Chase Hall during school break. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

2-27-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher at Rand Hall was found expelled by the bike storage room. The cost to refill it is $10.50. This charge along with the $75.00 fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment will be charged to Rand Hall.

3-1-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher located in the kitchen area at Howard House was found reading ³recharge². No residue was located to indicate that it had been discharged within the building. The recharging fee is $10.50. Security is continuing to investigate this incident to determine if criminal mischief was involved. If so, the House will be charged the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

3-7-01 - Two water fire extinguishers at Rand Hall were discharged. The cost to refill each extinguisher is $2.00, and a $75.00 Life Safety fine will also be charged per extinguishers. The total charged to Rand Hall is $154.00.

3-7-01 - A vending machine located in the basement at Parker Hall was smashed and products removed. The vending machine is owned by All Seasons. The combined damage and missing products is estimated to be approximately $500.00. It is not known who was responsible. The residents at Parker Hall will be charged for this.

3-9-01 - While Security was investigating a fire alarm at Parsons House, they discovered an expelled chemical fire extinguisher in the basement. The Lewiston Fire Department had to vent the powder residue with a large exhaust fan. The cost to refill the extinguisher is $33.50, and the Life Safety Fine is $75.00. Both charges will be charged to the house. An additional charge for the clean-up of the powder may also be charged to the residents of Parsons House.

3-9-01 - Several items of food were found on the ground outside the first floor kitchen window at Parker Hall. The screen had been pushed out from its frame. No one was around at the time. Damage to the screen was approximately $35.00. There was no estimate for the food items.


Criminal Mischief to Motor Vehicle

2-25-01 - A vehicle parked on Andrews Road had its passenger side window broken. Damage was estimated at $75.00. Nothing appeared to be missing from the 1998 Toyota Corolla. The incident was reported to the Lewiston Police Department.

2-26-01 - A vehicle parked in the Merrill Lot had its passenger side window broken. Damage was estimated at $200.00 to the 1988 Audi. The incident was reported to the Lewiston Police Department.

2-26-01 - Another vehicle parked in the Merrill Lot had its driverıs side window broken. Damage was estimated to be $150.00 to the 1994 Ford Explorer. The incident was reported to the Lewiston Police Department.

3-4-01 - A faculty member reported the driverıs side window of her 1989 Ford Aerostar broken while parked in the Merrill Lot.Damage was estimated at $75.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

3-4-01 - Another vehicle parked in the Merrill Lot had three large holes punched into the front windshield by a sharp object. Damage was estimated at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
