Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between February 24 , 2002 and March 9, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

3-01-02 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a bottle of hard liquor.

3-01-02 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue slipped event at Rand Hall. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

3-03-02 - Two kegs and a tap were confiscated from a room at John Bertram Hall for being in violation of the terms of a blue slipped event. A student was referred to the Dean of Students office.

3-05-02 - A keg was confiscated from the third floor hallway at Small House. No one was in the area.

3-06-02 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from the second floor of Frye House. No students in the area claimed ownership.

3-09-02 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue slipped event on the second floor of Village One. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Theft from a Motor Vehicle

2-26-02 - A vehicle that was parked in front of Libbey Forum was entered. Bates College Security and the Lewiston Police Department were able to stop the subject. He was not a member of the Bates College community. Nothing appeared missing from the vehicle. The suspect threatened a Security Officer and was arrested by the Lewiston Police Department.


Bicycle Theft

3-08-02 - A bike was stolen from between Chase Hall and Carnegie Science. The gray Fisher mountain bike was valued at $900.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Information

The death of our student, Morgan McDuffee, as a result of an altercation off campus on Main Street in Lewiston in the early morning hours on March 3, 2002, is still under investigation by the State Police. The local police have arrested the prime suspect in the homicide. Any students who may have direct information about the homicide should contact:

The authorities have given every assurance that by coming forward with direct information, students will not be at risk of legal action from their law enforcement agencies. The homicide is the primary focus of their investigation. If it is easier to hold interviews on campus, please let us know and we will make arrangements at Security.

In an effort to maintain the safety of all students, Bates Security has expanded their areas of escorts. Security staffing has also increased, as well as the patrols on and off campus. The Lewiston Police Department has also increased their patrol of the Bates College area.
