Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between February 23, 2003 and March 8, 2003.

Liquor Violations

2-28-03 - A student at Village One was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the guidelines for a blue-slipped event. A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated by Security.

3-2-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of a blue-slipped alcohol event. A keg of beer was confiscated by Security.

3-2-03 - A keg of beer was confiscated by Security from the third floor men's shower stall at Rand Hall. No students were in the area at the time.

3-8-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of a blue-slipped alcohol event. A keg of beer was confiscated by Security.

3-8-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the hard alcohol policy. Two bottles of alcohol were confiscated by Security.

3-8-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of a blue-slipped alcohol event. Two kegs of beer and two taps were confiscated by Security.

3-8-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violating the school's hard alcohol policy. A flask was confiscated by Security.


Drug Related Violations

3-4-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department responded and confiscated the marijuana. A pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was confiscated by Security.

3-7-03 - A visitor to the campus was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana at John Bertram Hall. The marijuana and a digital scale were confiscated by the Lewiston Police Department. A one-year Criminal Trespass warning was issued by Security.


Assault

3-8-03 - A visitor to the Campus reported that a Bates College student assaulted her at Hacker House. The visitor sustained a black eye and bruises to the face. The Lewiston Police Department was notified. At this time no criminal charges have been filed, and the Dean of Students Office has been advised.


Burglary

2-26-03 - A student at Parsons House reported that an envelope containing $450.00 was taken from his desk. His room was unlocked at the time. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Thefts

3-1-03 - A student reported the theft of two kegs of beer from behind the bushes on the side of Wilson House. The kegs were valued at approximately $110.00.


Criminal Mischief

3-7-03 - While responding to a fire alarm at Rand Hall, Security observed substantial damage done on the second and third floors. Two globes valued at $176.48 were broken, and one light lens valued at $88.24 was broken. A fire door was ripped off its hinges and damaged. Damage was estimated at $694.35 to the door. A hole was punched in the wall by the fire door causing $160.30 in damage. Also, the pull station on the wall was tampered with. A $75.00 fine for tampering with a life safety device was assessed. The total damage charged to the dorm was $1,194.30. The Dean of Students Office was notified.
