Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between February 11, and February 24, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy

2-11-01 - Security confiscated an unregistered keg of beer at Pierce House from the common bathroom on the first floor. Approximately twenty people were observed with cups of beer in the lounge and hallway area, but no one claimed ownership of the keg. A copy of this report was sent to the Dean of Students Office.

2-21-01 - Two full kegs of beer were found in a snow bank behind Rand Hall by Security. The kegs were confiscated and brought to Security.


Burglary

2-14-01 - One of the managers of the Ronj reported the theft of a gray metal cash box from the managerıs office. There was no sign of forced entry. Approximately $140.00 was in the cash box. The Lewiston Police Department responded and took a report of the incident.


Theft

2-15-01 - A Bates Banner was reported stolen from the wall at Merrill Gymnasium. The maroon 3ı x 5ı canvas banner with black letters outlined in white was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

2-16-01 - The Human Resource sign at 215 College Street was stolen from the building. The sign that was affixed to the building was valued at approximately $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

2-19-01 - The Bates College Telecommunications Administrator reported that a number of students were placing illegal calls after they obtained an access code from a former student. A list was turned into Security documenting all the information related to the calls including dormitory, and room numbers where the call originated from. The total amount charged to the access code was $1,454.85. The Lewiston Police Department was also notified .

2-24-01 - When Security went to check on a phone off the hook in the Nichols Street lot, they observed two males who were not Bates students, walking away from the phone. The cord from the Security phone was hanging out of the box, and the receiver was missing. The Lewiston Police Department was called, and one of the males was arrested for theft of the phone receiver. Both were issued Criminal Trespass warnings.


Criminal Mischief

2-11-01 - A window to the folding doors leading to the lounge at Frye Street Union was reported broken. It was not known who caused the damage. The damage was estimated at $50.00.

2-11-01 - One of the windows in the front door, and a stairwell double pane window was smashed out at Milliken House. A student was seen breaking the windows. The cost to replace these windows is approximately $245.00. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

2-17-01 - A window at Small House was found broken by Security. The window in the door that faced Frye Street will cot approximately $35.00 to replace.


Criminal Mischief to Motor Vehicle

2-16-01 - A vehicle parked in the Smith Lot facing Andrews Road had its chrome Mercedes Benz hood emblem ripped off. The emblem was taken from the studentıs 1987 gray Mercedes. It was valued at approximately $250.00 to $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
