Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between December 2, and December 15, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

12-02-01 - A stocked bar was found in a room at Turner House. Four bottles of hard liquor were confiscated. The student who resides in the room was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-02-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department at College and Frye Streets for possession of alcohol by a minor via consumption. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-02-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in the lounge at Hacker House. The student who claimed ownership was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-02-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department by Webb House for possession of alcohol by a minor. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-03-01 - A bottle of hard alcohol was found on the kitchen counter at Howard House. No one was in the area.

12-03-01 - A student was observed carrying hard alcohol into Rand Hall. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-04-01 - A bar was observed through an open door at John Bertram. The four students who live in the suite were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-06-01 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue-slipped party at Hacker House. The student who claimed ownership of the keg was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-07-01 - A student at Smith North was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of two bottles of hard liquor.

12-07-01 - A non blue-slipped keg of beer was confiscated from a room at John Bertram Hall. A student was referred to the Dean of Students for this violation as well as having a bar structure in his room.

12-07-01 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of two bottles of hard alcohol.

12-08-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found at Small House. No one was around at the time.

12-08-01 - Four students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for drinking beer at the Ronj, an alcohol free building.

12-09-01 - A half gallon of hard liquor was confiscated from the kitchen area at Chase House. No one was in the area.

12-09-01 - A student at Moody House was referred to the Dean of Students for possession of a non blue-slipped keg of beer, a bottle of hard alcohol, and for having a bar.

12-09-01 - A student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department at Chase House for possession of alcohol by a minor via consumption. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-09-01 - A bottle of liquor was found in the lounge area of Page Hall.

12-14-01 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from the men's room at Small House from a non blue-slipped party. One student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-14-01 - Four students at Village One were referred to the Dean of Students Office after a bar was observed in their room.

12-14-01 - A student at Small House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard alcohol.


Drug Related Violations

12-03-01 - Two students from Herrick House were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of drug paraphernalia commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate the items.

12-10-01 - A student from Webb House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department was called to confiscate the pipe.

12-15-01 - A student at Mitchell House was referred to Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department confiscated the pipe.


Assault

12-02-01 - A student was assaulted at Webb House when he tried to break up a fight. The student was punched in the face several times. He was taken to the Health Center to be checked. He was later sent to a local hospital because of blurred vision in one eye. No charges were filed.


Burglary

12-02-01 - A student at Frye House reported the theft of eighty compact discs from her unlocked room. The discs were marked with the student's initials. Nothing else appeared to be missing. The total value of the discs taken was $1,200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Note: 12-03-01 - The student called Security to advise them that the missing discs had been recovered. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-02-01 - A tool box was taken from an unlocked room at Parker Hall. The box and some of its contents were found on the ground in front of Parker Hall. The following items were reported missing: five to seven laser cut files valued at $50.00, one white "Sun Valley" iron valued at $50.00, one five degree base bevel guild valued at $90.00, two "Sun Valley wet stones valued at $20.00, one "Sun Valley" cutting stone valued at $ 7.00, one "TOKO" horsehair oval brush valued at $50.00, one kilogram of "Swix LF" wax valued at $50.00, one kilogram of "Swix CH" wax valued at $50.00, one 50 gram box of "TOKO" dibloc wax valued at $50.00, two small "Sun Valley" brushes valued at $20.00, and a "TOKO" main vice valued at $75.00. The total value of the missing items is $512.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

12-04-01 - A Coca Cola, 6 item soda machine at Webb House was destroyed and deemed a total loss. All the products were removed. The light bulbs were smashed, the bill acceptor was taken, the front panel was pried, and the front door lock was broken. New England Vending who leases the machine from the Coca Cola Bottling Company did not have a dollar amount of the damage or what was taken from the machine.

12-11-01 - A vending machine at Wentworth Adams was broken into. It appears that the machine was shaken, so that the contents were easily assessable without putting money in. New England Vending is in the process of compiling a list of items missing, and their value.

12-12-01 - A student at Hedge Hall reported the theft of a bag and ski boots from the Hedge Hall Storage. The black Rossignol bag was valued at $40.00, and the yellow and black Rossignol boots were valued at $500.00. The total value of the missing items is $540.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

12-05-01 - A student reported the theft of his bike from the front of Page Hall. The black 21 speed Giant Iguana mountain bike was valued at $100.00.

Note: 12-03-01 - A bike matching the description of the stolen bike above had been found by Security and placed in the Evidence Room. The student identified the bike as his, and it was returned to him.

12-09-01 - A student reported the theft of her unlocked bike from the front of Moody House. The blue 21 speed Schwinn Hurricane was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Note: 12-10-01 - The student called Security to report that her bike had been found. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-11-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from Frye House. The maroon Savannah Cruiser was valued at $80.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-13-01 - An unlocked bike was taken from the bike rack at Nash House. The black Trek was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-14-01 - A locked bike was taken from the bike rack at the rear of Rand Hall. The Mongoose Sycamore mountain bike was valued at $450.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

12-03-01 - The "Sure Vend" vending machine located in the basement of Page Hall appeared to have been tipped over in order to get products out of the machine. The only noticeable damage to the machine were some of the spiral hangers that secure the snacks were out of their original slots. New England Vending who owns the machine, was checking to see if any of the products were missing, and any other damage done.

12-03-01 - A circular hole was reported in a meshed window to the front door at Smith Middle. It was unknown what caused the hole. The impact was from the inside. Damage was estimated at $189.62.

12-06-01 - A large hole was discovered in a wall down in the basement of Smith Hall. No one was found in the area. The damage was estimated at $306.37.

12-09-01 - A doubled paned window on the second floor landing at Moulton House was broken. A heavy plastic cup had been thrown at the window. The estimated damage is $705.35.

12-10-01 - A fire extinguisher was discharged in the kitchen at Hedge Hall. The hall will be charged $110.50. The Life Safety fine is included in this total.

12-10-01 - A fire extinguisher from the second floor stairwell at Smith Hall was discharged. The hall will be charged $110.50. The Life Safety fine is included in this total.

12-10-01 - A discharged fire extinguisher was found in the basement of Smith Middle. The hall will be charged $110.50. The Life Safety fine is included in this total.

12-15-01 - Two large holes were discovered in the second floor hallway at John Bertram Hall. Damage was estimated at $383.00. No students were in the area.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

12-07-01 - A staff member reported that while his vehicle was parked near the intersection of Campus and Central Avenues a beer bottle had been thrown at his car. A dent was made on the driver's side door, and the paint was chipped. Damage was estimated at $500.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-08-01 - The back window to the Bates College Security sustained about $1000.00 in damage. A rock was found inside the van. Security is actively following up on information they received about this incident.
