Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between December 1, 2002 and December 14, 2002.

Drug Related Violations

12-6-02 - A student at Wentworth Adams was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-12-02 - The Lewiston Police Department confiscated some marijuana from a student at Herrick. Drug paraphernalia was confiscated by Security. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

12-12-02 - A student at Pierce House was referred to the Dean of Students for possession of cigarette papers, and a hand scale commonly used to weigh marijuana. The items were confiscated by Security.

12-13-02 - A student at Smith Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of two homemade pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana. The pipes were confiscated by Security.


Burglary

12-6-02 - A student reported that his locked room at Rand Hall was broken into during Thanksgiving break. Missing was a Toshiba laptop valued at $1325.00, and a Marshall 2554 guitar amplifier valued at $600.00. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.


Theft

12-9-02 - A student reported the theft of his skateboard from Alumni Gymnasium. The forty-inch blue and garnet "Soul Carver" board is valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

12-9-02 - The Office of Career Services reported the theft of some items from the bulletin board located in Chase Hall next to the Catering Office. Two laminated posters and some laminated snowflakes were taken. They were valued at approximately $30.00. No report was made to the Lewiston Police Department.

12-10-02 - A student reported the theft of his thirty-four inch skateboard from Alumni Gymnasium. The blue and white Sectornine board was valued at $140.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

12-4-02 - A student reported the theft of his unlocked bike from the front of Webb House. The eighteen speed red Huffy was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
12-10-02 - The student came by Security to report that his bike had been found. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
12-12-02 - A green twenty-one speed Mongoose mountain bike reported stolen on 11-18-02 was found by the Lewiston Police Department and returned to Security.


Criminal Mischief

12-6-02 - Global Security reported that a male threw a large snowball through a window at Alumni Gymnasium. The visitor to the campus was issued a summons for Criminal Mischief by the Lewiston Police Department and given a Criminal Trespass warning.

12-8-02 - An expelled chemical fire extinguisher was found in the middle of the football field. It was determined that it had been removed from the third floor of Village Three. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

12-8-02 - A screen was found ripped in the laundry room at Village Three. The cost to repair the screen is estimated at $67.59.

12-9-02 - A water fire extinguisher was found expelled on the first floor of John Bertram Hall. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

12-12-02 - A student at Small House reported that another student had thrown a rock through her window shattering the window and ripping the screen. The student responsible was spoken to and will be charged $437.90 for the damages. He will also be referred to the Dean of Students Office.
