Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between November 4 , and November 17, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

11-09-01 - A student at Wilson House was found to be in violation of the hard liquor policy on campus. He was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-09-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in the lounge at Clason House. No one was in the area at the time.

11-10-01 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from a non blue-slipped party at Frye House. The student who hosted the party was referred to the Dean of Students Office for this incident, and for having a bar in his room.

11-11-01 - A tapped keg was found in the recycling bin in the basement at Herrick House. No one in the area claimed ownership.

11-12-01 - Two empty kegs of beer were found in the trash room at Frye House. No one was in the area at the time.

11-12-01 - While responding to a fire alarm at Frye House, Security noticed a bar set up in a room. The two students who reside in that room were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-13-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in the basement of Herrick House. No one was in the area at the time.

11-14-01 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for violation of the hard liquor policy.

11-15-01 - While responding to a fire alarm at Village Three, Security observed hard alcohol in a common area of a suite. A student who resides in the suite claimed ownership, and was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-16-01 - A bar was observed through an open door in a room at John Bertram Hall. The four students who reside in the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-17-01 - A bar was observed in a room through an open door at Village One. The four residents of the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-17-01 - A student at Pierce House was found in violation of the hard liquor policy. She was referred to the Dean of Students.


Burglary

11-04-01 - A student at Pierce House reported that his room had been entered while he was away for the weekend. The drawers to his bureau were opened but nothing was missing. A safe kept in the closet was thrown against the wall causing $306.37 in damages. There was no damage to the safe. The door to the room was pushed in causing about $448.35 damage. The total property damage was $754.72. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-12-01 - A student at Parker Hall reported that a Playstation and three games were taken from his unlocked room. The Sony Playstation was valued at $300.00. The games were valued at $40.00 a piece for a total of $120.00. The total value of the stolen items is $420.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

11-05-01 - A student reported the theft of his gym bag from one of the cubbies at the Davis Fitness Center. The EMS royal blue bag was valued at $40.00. The bag contained: maroon Adidas pants valued at $40.00, a white T-shirt valued at $5.00, and a Batescard valued at $10.00. The total value of the stolen items is $95.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

NOTE: On 11-08-01 the student reported that his bag was found in a friend's car. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-11-01 - A student reported the theft of her stereo from the lounge at Small House. The Panasonic, AM-FM, Twin Cassette, Five Disc Stereo was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

11-04-01 - A student reported the theft of her blue ten speed Physiofit bike from the porch at Cheney House. The bike was unlocked. It was valued at $15.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

NOTE: On 11-04-01 the bike was recovered at Smith Middle. The Lewiston Police Department and the complainant were notified.

11-06-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from the bike rack at Chase Hall. The black six speed Model-Classic road bike was valued at $65.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-11-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from the front of Parker Hall. The black eighteen speed Schwinn Hurricane mountain bike was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-14-01 - A bike was reported stolen from the bike rack in front of Wentworth Adams Hall. The twenty-one speed pink and silver mountain bike was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-14-01 - A locked bike was reported stolen from the bike rack outside of Wentworth Adams Hall. The silver Dyno BMX was valued at $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-14-01 - An unlocked bike was stolen from outside Frye Street Union. The blue Skymosh was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-15-01 - An unlocked bike was stolen from Ladd Library. The blue eighteen speed Fila mountain bike was valued at $30.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft from a Motor Vehicle

11-07-01 - A student reported that her vehicle had been entered while it was parked in the Personnel Lot on Wood Street. The cylinder lock on the passenger door had been pried off to gain entry. An AIWA radio combination digital CD player was taken. It was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

11-04-01 - A window to the front door at Parker Hall was smashed. No one in the area came forward to tell how the window got broken. The cost to repair it is $379.24.

11-04-01 - As a result of a burglary that occurred at Pierce House, a total of $754.72 of criminal mischief was done to the room. The door received $448.35 in damages, and the wall will cost approximately $306.37 to be repaired.

11-09-01 - A light cover was broken in the first floor stairwell at Rand Hall. The cost to replace the cover is $84.04.

11-10-01 - The security phone outside of Hacker House had to be replaced after the phone cord had been tampered with. The cost to replace the phone is $40.00.

11-12-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled in the fourth floor laundry room at Parker Hall. The hall will be charged for the following: $35.50 to recharge the extinguisher, the $75.00 Life Safety fine, and $70.00 for two hours of cleaning.

11-12-01 - Seven fire extinguishers at Smith North, and Smith Middle had safety pins removed from them. The $75.00 Life Safety fine will be assessed to the dorm for each extinguisher for a total of $525.00.

11-16-01 - A student at Turner House reported that a window in her room was broken while she was away from her room. It was unknown what caused the window to break. The window was valued at $705.35.

11-16-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher at Smith Middle was tampered with. The safety pin was removed. The dorm will be charged the $75.00 Life Safety fine.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

11-05-01 - A student reported that his vehicle was damaged while it was parked on Campus Avenue by Chase Hall. Two dents were made on the driver's side of the vehicle. The estimated cost of the damage was $800.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-11-01 - A staff member reported that her right front tire had been slashed while her vehicle was parked on Campus Avenue by the Health Center. Damage was estimated at $85.00.

11-16-01 - A student reported that the mirror on the passenger door to her vehicle was damaged while it was parked on Wood Street. Damage was estimated at $50.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
