Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between November 3, 2002 and November 16, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

11-3-02 - A keg of beer was confiscated from a room at Rand Hall. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-8-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement arrested a student on Frye Street for furnishing liquor to a minor. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-8-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement summonsed a student on Frye Street for possession of alcohol by a minor. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-8-02 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. Four bottles of hard alcohol were also confiscated.

11-9-02 - A student at Village 2 was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. One bottle of hard alcohol was confiscated.

11-9-02 - A student at Smith Hall South was found to be in violation of the hard alcohol policy. He was referred to the Dean of Students Office. One bottle of hard alcohol was confiscated.

11-9-02 - Two students at John Bertram Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. Two bottles of hard alcohol were confiscated.

11-14-02 - A student at Wilson House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy. One bottle of hard liquor was confiscated.

11-15-02 - A student at Hacker House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a non blue-slipped keg of beer.

11-15-02 - A student at Nash House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for collecting money for beer at an event, which is a violation of the liquor policy.

11-16-02 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a keg of beer on the sidewalk of Frye Street. The keg was from a blue-slipped event at Pierce House.

11-16-02 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in the common area at Pierce House. No one was around at the time.


Drug Related Violations

11-5-02 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The pipe was confiscated by Security.

11-9-02 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The pipe was confiscated by Security.


Weapons

11-7-02 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a .24 caliber, 6-millimeter air shotgun. Three other students were present. The gun was confiscated by Security.


Burglary

11-13-02 - A faculty member at Olin reported that $40.00 was stolen from her wallet. The wallet was in her locked office. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

11-3-02 - A student at Page Hall reported that $100.00 was stolen from a locked box he kept in his desk. The room was unlocked. The student did not want the incident reported to the police.

11-3-02 - A student reported the theft of his jacket while attending a dance at the Gray Cage. The dark blue winter jacket with a hood was valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

11-5-02 - A student reported the theft of her unlocked bike from outside of Chase Hall. The dark green Schwinn 18-speed mountain bike was valued at $80.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE:
11-5-02 - The Students bike was found in the rear of Pettengill Hall by Global Security. The Lewiston Police Department was advised.

11-10-02 - A student reported the theft of her silver BMX bike from the Ladd Library. The bike was valued at $100.00.

UPDATE:
11-10-02 - The bike was located a short time later by Security behind a bush at Wilson House.

11-10-02 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from the front lawn of Hayes House. The dark green Huffy 6-speed mountain bike was valued at $130.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

11-5-02 - A ground floor window to the furnace room at Rand Hall was found broken. Damage was estimated at $370.31

11-10-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled in the first floor hallway at Rand Hall. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.

11-10-02 - A window in the front lounge was broken at Wilson House. A student reported an unidentified male running from the front of the building. Damage was estimated at $199.99.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

11-10-02 - A vehicle was keyed while it was parked in the Faculty/Staff lot adjacent to Parker Hall. Damage was estimated in excess of $1000.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-11-02 - A vehicle parked on Frye Street was damaged. It appeared that someone had banged into the fender. The damage was estimated at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-15-02 - A student reported that his vehicle had been tampered with while it was parked in the Wood Street Lot. The door lock had been punched out and his glove box was entered. Nothing appeared to be missing. Damage was estimated to be $800.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
