Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between November 17, 2002 and November 30, 2002.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

11-18-02 - Two kegs of beer were confiscated from Small House due to a violation of the blue-slip policy. The student who sponsored the blue-slip was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-22-02 - A student at Roger Williams Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy.


Drug Related Violations

11-17-02 - A student at Wentworth Adams was referred to the Dean of Students for possession of two pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana. The pipes were confiscated by Security.

11-18-02 - A student at Frye House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of two pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana. The pipes were confiscated by Security.

11-21-02 - Four students at John Bertram Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. A pipe was confiscated by Security.

11-21-02 - Two students at Smith Hall North were summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana. A pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was also confiscated. The students were referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Bicycle Theft

11-18-02 - A student reported the theft of his bike from in front of Chase Hall. The 21-speed green Mongoose Sycamore bike was valued at $200.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-21-02 - A student reported the theft of her bike from the bike rack at Wentworth Adams Hall. The girl's pink bike was valued at $25.00. No report was made to the Lewiston Police Department.


Theft from a Motor Vehicle

11-21-02 - A student's vehicle parked by the corner of College Street and Frye Street was broken into. The following items were reported missing: a Blaupunkt "Honolulu" detachable CD/Radio deck valued at $350.00, an Orion trunk model subwoofer speaker valued at $400.00, a Smith & Wesson folding knife valued at $100.00, a black CD case valued at $20.00, and fifty assorted rock CD's valued at $15.00 each for a total value of $750.00. The total value of all the missing items was $1,620.00. The total damage done to the dashboard and car door was estimated at $400.00. The Lewiston Police Department were involved in the investigation.


Criminal Mischief

11-20-02 - An expelled chemical fire extinguisher was found on the first floor at Frye House. The house will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

11-22-02 - An expelled fire extinguisher was found on the ground floor at John Bertram Hall. The hall will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

11-24-02 - A window to a first floor student's room at Herrick House was reported broken. The window was broken from the outside. No one was in the room at the time. The cost to repair the window is $199.10.

11-26-02 - The blue light to the Security Phone at the Olin lot was broken. Damage was estimated at $488.00. No on was in the area.


Safety Tip

Remember covering a smoke detector or expelling a fire extinguisher will result in a $75.00 Life Safety fine charged to your dorm/house!
