Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between October 7 , and October 20, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

10-20-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was found on the kitchen counter at Milliken House. There was no one around at the time.

10-20-01 - A student was observed at John Bertram Hall with a bottle of hard liquor. The bottle was confiscated, and the student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Aggravated Assault

10-14-01 - A student reported that he was assaulted in September by the Villages by another student. On 10-12-01 he reported that he was assaulted again by friends of the student outside of Page Hall. The student was treated at the Health Center for a broken nose, separated ribs, and bruises around both eyes. There were no formal charges filed with the Lewiston Police Department. Security and the Dean of Students Office are continuing to investigate this assault.


Hate Incident

10-11-01 - A blue-slipped chalk display on the quad was defaced. The display was an officially sanctioned presentation in celebration of National Coming Out Day. This incident was investigated by Security and the Lewiston Police Department. Copies of the reports that described the altered language were forwarded to the Attorney General's Office in Augusta.

10-12-01 - Students members of the Outfront group were verbally confronted while they were holding their parade on campus. When the group passed by Parker Hall, male students were heard screaming homophobic remarks out of the third floor bathroom. Security spoke to two students at Parker Hall regarding this incident. They were also referred to the Dean Of Students Office. A copy of this report was forwarded to the Attorney General's Office in Augusta.

10-13-01 - A student at Page Hall who is a member of the Outfront group reported that someone had written an offensive message on the wall next to her room. Pictures were taken by Security. A copy of this report was sent to the Attorney General's Office in Augusta.

NOTE: All Hate Crime/Incidents that occur on the Bates College Campus are reviewed by the Hate Crime/Bias Committee established in 1996.


Theft

10-15-01 - A student reported the theft of his wallet from the Den. The blue leather bifold wallet contained a credit card, a driver's license, a BatesCard, and $70.00 in cash. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

10-12-01 - An unlocked bike that was parked at the bike rack at Chase House was reported stolen. The Motiv hybrid bike had a black seat, and red and white handlebars. The bike was of the 1980's vintage and had no monetary value. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-13-01 - A student reported that his bike along with a cable and lock were stolen from the bike rack at Rand Hall. The blue Raleigh M45 twenty-one speed was valued at $300.00. The lock was valued at $10.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-15-01 - A white Huffy bicycle, with florescent pink discs in the spokes was stolen from the bike rack at Frye House. The bike, which was not locked was valued at $50.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-17-01 - A student reported the theft of his unlocked bicycle from behind Pierce House. The blue gray Trek 850 is valued at $700.00. The Lewiston Police was notified.


Criminal Mischief

10-11-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled in the kitchen at Wentworth Adams. The dorm will be charged the $7.00 refill fee as well as the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.

10-13-01 - A light pole on the Quad was knocked over. The approximate cost of the pole is $800.00. No one was around at the time.

10-13-01 - A pane of glass was found missing from an exterior door at Page Hall. The value of the pane was $189.00.

10-16-01 - A dry chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled in the kitchen of Smith Hall. The hall will be charged the $7.00 refill fee as well as the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

10-14-01 - A vehicle parked at the Merrill Lot had the passenger side window smashed out. The damage was estimated at $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
