Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between October 6, 2002 and October 19, 2002.

Assults

10-12-02 - A student reported that she was assaulted by another student at an off campus party. The student was struck on the right cheek with a fist. The Lewiston Police Department was notified, and a summonsed for assault was issued.

10-13-02 - The other student involved in the above assault reported to Security that her nose was injured in the confrontation. The Lewiston Police Department responded.


Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

10-8-02 - A student at Parsons House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard liquor policy.

10-12-02 - Three students were summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department at an off campus residence. Two students were summonsed for disorderly conduct and furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol and the third for possession of alcohol by a minor. All three students were also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-12-02 - A visitor to Campus was summonsed in the rear of Smith Hall for being in violation of the open container law by the Lewiston Police Department.

10-13-02 - A bottle of hard liquor was found in a room at Small House. The two residents of the room were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-13-02 - A student at Chase House was found to be in violation of the hard liquor policy. He was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-13-02 - A student at Hacker House was issued a summons by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of alcohol by consumption. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-14-02 - A student at Parsons House was referred to the Dean of Students for violating the guidelines for a blue slipped keg of beer. The keg was confiscated. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-14-02 - An empty keg and a partially full keg of beer were confiscated at Small House for being in violation of blue slipped guidelines. Both kegs were confiscated. A student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Drug Related Violations

10-8-02 - A student at Parsons House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana, and a small amount of marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department also responded.

10-12-02 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana, and a small amount of marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department also responded.


Burglary

10-6-02 - A student at Smith Hall North reported the theft of his drum from his unlocked room. The Djenbe drum was valued at $225.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-10-02 - A student a John Bertram Hall reported a theft from his room. The room was left unattended for a few minutes. Missing were a pair of jeans, no value given, a black wallet of unknown value, several credit cards, a BatesCard valued at $10.00, and approximately $20.00 in cash. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-19-02 - Four local juveniles were observed exiting from an open hole under the barn adjacent to Nash House. Nothing was taken and no damage was discovered. The Physical Plant was notified to close up the hole. The four juveniles were issued on year Criminal Trespass Warnings by Security.


Theft from Motor Vehicle

10-15-02 - A student reported the theft of his motorcycle license plate while it was parked in the Village parking lot. The value of the plate was $5.50. The incident was reported to the Lewiston Police Department.


Bicycle Theft

10-7-02 - A student reported the theft of his unlocked bike from outside Pettengill Hall. The blue three speed Schwinn was valued at $25.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
10-7-02 - Later that evening the bike was found on the lawn near Lake Andrews. The student and the Lewiston Police Department were advised.

10-15-02 - A bike locked to the front railing at Wentworth Adams Hall was reported stolen. The blue Schwinn mountain bike was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-23-02 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from outside Chase Hall. The silver twenty-one-speed L.L. Bean Evolution bike was valued at $500.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE
10-22-02 - The bike reported stolen above was recovered by Security on the side of Small House. The student and the Lewiston Police Department were advised.


Criminal Mischief

10-6-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled throughout the first floor common area at Pierce House. The dorm will be charged $264.92 plus custodial labor. The damage included the replacement of the extinguisher at $111.92 including the Life Safety fine, the extinguisher recharge fee of $153.00 with the Life Safety fine.

10-13-02 - A light globe was broken at Page Hall. A student admitted to the damage while tossing a football around. He will be charged $85.04 to replace the globe.

10-16-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was expelled on the first floor of Rand Hall. The Hall will be charged $10.50 to refill the extinguisher as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

10-16-02 - Two chemical fire extinguishers were found expelled at in side Village Three, and a third outside by the front entrance. The dorm will be charged $111.92 to refill the extinguishers, which also includes the Life Safety fine.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

10-8-02 - It was reported to Security that while a person was picking up items at the loading dock at Commons the driver's side mirror of his vehicle was damaged. The damage was estimated at $100.00. The complainant did not want to report the damage to the Lewiston Police Department.
