Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between October 24, 2004 and November 6, 2004.

Assault

11-03-04 - A student reported through 911 that two males assaulted him and a friend as they were walking across the Quad. The complaintant believed that the two assailants were Bates College Students.


Burglary

10-24-04 - A resident of Rand Hall reported that her I-Book computer was taken from her room. The value of the I-Book was $1500.00. The Lewiston Police were advised of the incident.


Theft

10-31-04 - A student reported that he discovered his BatesCard was taken after he left the item lying on the grass outside of Merrill Gym.


Bicycle Theft

10-31-04 - A student reported that her bicycle was stolen from the outside bike rack of Wentworth Adams Hall. The Silver Mongoose was not locked to the bike rack. The value of the bike is $150.00.

11-01-04 - A student reported that her unlocked Next mountain bike was stolen from the bike rack of Pettengill Hall. The student later located the bike somewhere on the campus.


Arson

10-28-04 - A trashcan was set on fire on Bardwell Street in front of Smith Hall. Officers were able to extinguish the fire using a water fire extinguisher.


Criminal Trespass

10-31-04 - A resident of Parker Hall found an individual passed out in her room. When Officers arrived at the room, the individual refused to cooperate. Lewiston Police were called to assist and the individual was arrested for criminal trespassing.


Narcotics Laws

11-03-04 - Four students were referred to the Dean of Students for violation of Narcotic Laws inside of Rand Hall.

11-04-04 - One student was summons by the Lewiston Police for violation of Narcotic Laws at the corner of Campus Avenue and College Street.

11-05-04 - A resident of Wilson House was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of Narcotic Laws.


Liquor Laws Violation

10-30-04 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws at a soccer game.

10-30-04 - Four residents of Smith Hall were referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.

10-30-04 - A resident of Smith Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.

10-30-04 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws on College Street.

11-03-04 - A resident of Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.

11-06-04 - A resident of John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of State Liquor Laws.


Liquor Policy Violation

11-06-04 - A resident of Village 2 was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the College Liquor Policy.


Criminal Mischief

10-26-04 - Security and Campus Safety spoke to a student in reference to the damage she was observed causing in Chase House. The student took responsibility of the damage and will make restitution.

10-30-04 - A sink in one of the bathrooms of John Bertram Hall was ripped from the wall causing water damage to the room.

10-31-04 - A chemical fire extinguisher was discharged in the kitchen of Village 1.

11-03-04 - A glass panel to a fire extinguisher container was found broken inside of Rand Hall.

11-04-04 - A pull station was activated in Rand Hall, causing the fire alarm to go off. Also, an individual damaged several spindles from the center stairwell banister by kicking them from the stairwell.

11-06-04 - A visitor of the college was observed breaking the glass panel, which holds a fire extinguisher at Rand Hall. The visitor was identified and summons by the Lewiston Police for criminal mischief and also given a one-year criminal trespass warning.

11-06-04 - Students who were sleeping on the Quad reported that two individuals tried several times to tip over the tent that they were sleeping in. The tent was badly damaged.


Neighborhood Complaints

10-24-04 - Lewiston Police and Security and Campus Safety went to 26 White Street for a complaint of loud music. The tenants were issued a disorderly conduct warning. The incident took place at 1:55 a.m.
