Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between October 21, and November 3, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

10-25-01 - An empty keg was confiscated from the lounge at Hacker House. No one was in the area at the time.

10-26-01 - Security dispersed a large group of students at John Bertram Hall who were drinking beer, and listening to a D.J. There was no blue-slip for this event. The student who took responsibility for the gathering was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-27- 01 - A student was summonsed by a Maine State Liquor Inspector for possession of alcohol by a minor outside of the Gray Cage. The student was also referred to the Dean of Student's Office.

11-2-01 - A partially full keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from the third floor at Moody House. No blue-slip had been issued for this event. A student was referred to the Dean of Student's Office.

11-2-01 - A half gallon of hard liquor was confiscated at Small House. A student was referred to the Dean of Student's Office.

11-2-01 - A student, who was in charge of a blue-slipped, chemical free event at Skelton Lounge in Chase Hall, was observed with a bottle of beer. The beer was confiscated, and the student was referred to the Dean of Student's Office.

11-2-01 - A bottle of hard liquor was confiscated from a student at Village Three. The student was referred to the Dean of Student's Office.

11-3-01 - Two bottles of hard liquor were found in the hallway of Herrick House. No one was in the area at the time.


Simple Assault

10-22-01 - Two unknown male subjects assaulted a person who was delivering pizza to campus. While in his vehicle, the subject was struck on the arm, and grabbed by the collar in an attempt to pull him through the window. The suspects were both white males approximately six feet tall with athletic builds. One was wearing a blue sweatshirt, while the other had on a white cardigan. A Security Alert was issued. The Lewiston Police Department, and Campus Security are continuing to follow-up on this incident.


Burglary

10-21-01 - A student at Parker Hall reported that a window to an entrance door was broken. Four males were observed in the building. It appears that these subjects were visiting on campus. No other damage was observed, and nothing was reported taken. The cost to replace the window is $189.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Theft

10-25-01 - A staff member reported the theft of keys from one of the cubbies while he was working out at the Davis Fitness Center. The five College keys were valued at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

Update: 10-26-01 - The staff member found the keys. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Bicycle Theft

10-22-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from outside Chase Hall. The red Huffy Baron was valued at $80.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

10-24-01 - A bike locked to the outside bike rack at Chase Hall was reported stolen. The cable type lock was also taken. The red twenty-one speed Cannondale R 500 was valued at $1022.44, and the cable lock at $20.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-2-01 - An unlocked bike left by a tree outside of Smith Hall North was stolen. The black, ten speed, Nishiki was valued at $60.00.

Note: While a Security Officer was writing a report on the stolen bike, another Security Officer located the bike between Chase Hall and Carnegie Science. The owner was contacted.

Updates:

10-9-01 - A purple Diamondback, Sorrento mountain bike reported stolen on 9-23-01 was found intact behind the Mays Center. Both the owner and the Lewiston Police Department were notified.

10-16-01 - A blue 21 speed Trek reported stolen on 9-6-01 was found behind Canham House. The tires, handle bars and brakes were missing. At the owner's request, the unrepairable bike was discarded. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

10-21-01 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled in the laundry area of Smith Hall. The hall will be charged the $33.00 refill fee, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.

10-30-01 - An estimated $200.00 to $300.00 worth of damage was done to both the Leahey Field, and the new track field by a vehicle driving around in circles The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

11-3-01 - An expelled water fire extinguisher was found on the first floor at Herrick House. The house will be charged the $2.00 refill fee, as well as the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

10-31-01 - A vehicle parked on the corner of College Street and Andrews Road had the rear window of the driver's side broken. The window was valued at $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Update to Security Alert Issued on 10-23-01

On 10-25-01 Campus Security was given an update from the Lewiston Police Department regarding the incident of a firecracker being thrown at a staff member on Campus Avenue. The individuals responsible were located. It was discovered that a firecracker was not thrown, but the vehicle was rigged in such a way that it would backfire while in operation. The backfire caused flames to shoot out from the exhaust, and produce a loud sound similar to a firecracker. Also, as the vehicle passed by the staff member, a lit cigarette was thrown in his direction. Both the driver and the passenger in the vehicle were cited for Reckless Conduct, and issued a one year Criminal Trespass Warning.
