Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between October 20, 2002 and November 2, 2002.

Assults

10-31-02 - A student was assaulted by another student during a confrontation on the front porch at Pierce House. The student was bitten on the nose, hand and upper arm. The student was treated at a local hospital, and received stitches to his nose. No charges have been filed with the Lewiston Police Department. The Dean of Students Office is referring this incident to the Student Conduct Committee for review.

10-31-02 - A student was assaulted by another student at an off campus location. The student received a bump on his forehead as well as a black eye. He was seen at the Health Center. The matter was turned over to the Dean of Students Office.


Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

10-26-02 - An empty keg of beer was confiscated from the lounge at John Bertram Hall. No one was in the area at the time.

10-31-02 - Five students were summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department at an off campus residence. Three students were summonsed for furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol, and two were summonsed for consumption by a minor. They all were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

10-31-02 - Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the school's hard liquor policy at Holmes House.

11-2-02 - Maine State Liquor Enforcement summonsed a student for possession of two fictitious drivers' licenses and possession of alcohol by a minor at Rand Hall. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-2-02 - Two students at Smith North Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of hard alcohol.

11-2-02 - A student at Rand Hall was issued a summons by Maine State Liquor Enforcement for possession of alcohol by a minor. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-2-02 - A student was arrested by Maine State Liquor Enforcement at Rand Hall for furnishing alcohol to minors. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

11-2-02 - A student attending a dance at the Gray Cage was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of alcohol by a minor. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Drug Related Violations

10-22-02 - A valve to a pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana was confiscated from an outside windowsill at Parker Hall. One student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Criminal Mischief

10-26-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled on the fourth floor of Smith South. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.

10-28-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled on the first floor at Rand Hall by the lounge. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the $75.00 Life Safety Fine.

10-30-02 - Global Security reported that a window near the front entrance of Pierce House was broken. Damage was estimated at $370.31. No one was in the area at the time.

10-31-02 - Global Security reported that the snow fence around the football field was down. Someone had removed all the stakes holding the fence up. No damage was done to the fence, but the labor cost to set up the fence again was estimated at $70.00.

11-2-02 - Global Security reported that the outside pane of a double paned window was broken at Rand Hall. The damage was estimated at $199.10.

11-2-02 - A student at Page Hall reported that someone had thrown a brick through his window. Damage was estimated at $199.10.

10-13-02 - A light globe was broken at Page Hall. A student admitted to the damage while tossing a football around. He will be charged $85.04 to replace the globe.

10-16-02 - A chemical fire extinguisher was expelled on the first floor of Rand Hall. The Hall will be charged $10.50 to refill the extinguisher as well as the $75.00 Life Safety fine.

10-16-02 - Two chemical fire extinguishers were found expelled at in side Village Three, and a third outside by the front entrance. The dorm will be charged $111.92 to refill the extinguishers, which also includes the Life Safety fine.
