Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between January 26, 2003 and February 8, 2003.

Liquor Violations

2-4-03 - A partially empty keg was confiscated from the piano lounge at Rand Hall. The keg was not from a blue slipped event.

2-6-03 - A keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from Turner House. Two students were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a non-blue slipped keg and tap.

2-7-03 - A non-blue slipped keg of beer and a tap were confiscated from the third floor at Parker Hall. No one in the area claimed ownership of the keg.

2-8-03 - Two students at Frye House were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a non-blue slipped keg of beer.

2-8-03 - Two students at John Bertram Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy.


Drug Related Violations

2-5-03 - A pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana and approximately six grams of marijuana were confiscated from a room at Parker Hall. One student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana. This student along with another was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

2-8-03 - Two students at John Bertram Hall were referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of cigarette rolling papers, marijuana stems and seeds as well as a bag of marijuana. One student was summonsed by the Lewiston Police Department for possession of marijuana.


Burglary

1-29-03 - A student at Smith Hall South reported that her wallet was stolen from her unlocked room. The black wallet was valued at $20.00. The wallet contained a one-dollar bill ripped in half, a checkbook, a social security card, an insurance card, a credit card and a laundry card. The total value of the missing items is $21.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

2-3-03 - A faculty member at Olin Arts reported the theft of a cash box from his desk drawer. The desk drawer was not locked but the two inner office doors were locked. The cash box valued at $35.00 contained about $600.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded.


Theft

1-26-03 - A student at Milliken House reported that approximately $15.00 was taken from his wallet. The door to his room was closed but not locked. The student reported that there were visitors in the building that were non-Bates students. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-28-03 - A student at Milliken House reported a theft from the lounge at Milliken House. The items taken were a Playstation 2 valued at $300.00, and two Playstation games valued at $50.00 each. The total value of the items is $400.00. The student also reported that visitors were in the building as reported in the previous theft from Milliken House. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

2-2-03 - A student at Wentworth Adams reported that while she was away from her room the door to her room was damaged. The indentations resembled the outline of a heel of a shoe. Damage was estimated at $470.76.

2-5-03 - A window in the lounge at Pierce House was reported broken by a beer bottle. Four students in the area stated they did not know how the window got broken. Damage was estimated at $370.31.

2-6-03 - An employee of New England Vending reported that a snack vending machine at Wentworth Adams Hall located in the kitchen area of the basement was tampered with. Someone had tried to drill out the key slot. No estimated of damage is available at this time.
