Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). amended 1992 and 1998, renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Statistics Act."

The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between January 12, 2003 and January 25, 2003.

Liquor Violations

1-15-03 - A student at Pierce House was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy.

1-18-03 - A student at Page Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy.

1-22-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for being in violation of the hard alcohol policy.

1-24-03 - A student at John Bertram Hall was referred to the Dean of Students for violation of the hard alcohol policy.


Drug Related Violations

1-17-03 - A student at Parker Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana.

1-18-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana.

1-18-03 - A student at Rand Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possession of a small amount of marijuana and cigarette papers.

1-18-03 - A student at Page Hall was referred to the Dean of Students Office for possessing a homemade water bong commonly used to smoke marijuana.


Burglary

1-15-03 - A faculty member at Olin Arts reported the theft of $55.00 in cash from her locked office. There were no signs of forced entry. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-16-03 - A student reported that while her vehicle was parked in the Wood Street/Vale Street parking lot it was broken into. The driver's side window was broken and a CD AM/FM stereo was taken causing damage to the dashboard. Damage to the window was estimated at $300.00, and approximately $600.00 damage was done to the dashboard. The Clarion CD was valued at $150.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-16-03 - A student's vehicle parked in the Wood Street/Vale Street parking lot was entered. The driver's side window was shattered and the stereo stolen. Pry marks were observed by the broken window. The damage to the window was $100.00 and about $200.00 was done to the console when the stereo was removed. The Pioneer Stereo AM/FM CD was valued at $250.00. The Lewiston Police Department was called to the scene to investigate.

1-17-03 - A student reported that her vehicle was parked in the Personnel Lot on Wood Street was broken into. Entry was made by breaking the front passenger side window. Damage to the window was estimated at $300.00. A Sony combination radio and CD player valued at $300.00 was stolen from the vehicle. The Lewiston Police Department responded to the scene.

1-17-03 - Another vehicle parked at the Personnel Lot on Wood Street was broken into. The driver's side window was broken, a Sony CD player was stolen, and damage was done to the dashboard. The Sony CD player was valued at approximately $200. 00. The vehicle sustained about $600.00 in damage. The Lewiston Police Department responded.

1-23-03 - A student reported the theft of her cell phone from her unlocked room at Parker Hall. The blue Nokia phone was valued at $99.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-24-03 - A student reported the theft of her wallet from an unlocked locker at Alumni Gymnasium. The black billfold was valued at $25.00. The wallet contained credit cards, a debit card, an insurance card, a driver's license valued at $40.00, a BatesCard valued at $10.00, a laundry card with unknown value, and a payroll check. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

NOTE: Due to the number of vehicles broken into around Campus the Lewiston Police Department and Bates College Security have increased their patrol in the area. Anyone who sees any suspicious activity should contact Security immediately.


Theft

1-24-03 - A student reported the theft of her wallet from an unlocked locker at Alumni Gymnasium. The black billfold was valued at $25.00. The wallet contained credit cards, a debit card, an insurance card, a driver's license valued at $40.00, a BatesCard valued at $10.00, a laundry card with unknown value, and a payroll check. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

1-12-03 - Windows at John Bertram Hall were found cracked and removed from the door on the east side of the building. Damage was estimated at $199.10. The dorm will be charged with the damage.

1-12-03 - A student reported that the door to his room was damaged. Damage to the door and lock area was estimated at $411.51. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-16-03 - A chemical fire extinguisher was expelled on the ground floor at Smith Middle. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the fine for tampering with Life Safety Equipment.

1-17-03 - A thermostat on the third floor at Parker Hall was found broken along with a knob on the radiator. Damage was estimated at $63.74.

1-17-03 - Profanity was found written in lipstick on the stairwell between the ground and first floor level at Smith Hall North. Security was able to remove the writing.

1-17-03 - A chemical fire extinguisher was found expelled on the ground floor of Smith Middle. The dorm will be charged $111.92, which includes the Life Safety fine.

1-20-03 - A window on the front door of Parsons House was broken. Damage was estimated at $199.10. It was undetermined how the window got broken.


Criminal Mischief to a Motor Vehicle

1-16-03 - A student reported that the rear passenger window of her vehicle was broken while it was parked in the lot at Wood Street and Vale Street. Nothing was reported missing. Damage was estimated at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

1-16-03 - Another student reported that while her car was parked in the Wood Street/Vale Street lot the driver's side window was shattered. Nothing appeared to be missing. Damage was estimated at $100.00. The Lewiston Police Department responded.

1-1-03 - A student's vehicle parked at the Merrill Gymnasium Lot received about $600.00 in damage. The driver's side window was broken out and the front windshield was cracked. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
