Recyclable Materials

Office paper

WHAT: It includes only high-quality white paper, such as copy paper, computer paper and letterhead.
WHERE: Office paper is collected only in certain, low-contamination probability areas such as the library, computer centers, classrooms and Lane Hall.
HOW: Place in appropriate labeled blue bins. Staples are OK, but please remove paper clips.


Mixed paper

WHAT: Mixed paper includes the following: white and colored paper (photocopy, notebook, card stock, etc.), flyers, brochures, manila folders, envelopes, junk mail, cards, postcards, calenders, drink boxes (juice, soymilk), wrapping paper, all paperboard boxes (shoe boxes, cereal boxes, clean frozen food boxes, tubes from paper towels, wrapping paper, etc.), as well as milk and egg cartons.
WHERE:

  • Residence Halls: In the blue bins in each room.
  • Offices: Blue bins
  • Centers: Blue bins
    HOW: Place in appropriate labeled blue bins. Staples are OK, but please remove paper clips.


    No. 2 plastic

    WHAT: Must say No. 2 plastic on the container. Includes milk jugs, as well as many shampoo and cleaning product containers.
    WHERE: Gray bins with orange labels. Located in Recycling Centers.
    HOW: Rinse and place in bins.


    Tins

    WHAT: Tin cans for cat food, tuna and most canned foods.
    WHERE: Gray bins with orange labels. Located in Recycling Centers.
    HOW: Rinse and place in bins.


    Glass (clear and colored)

    WHAT: All glass bottles that cannot be returned for deposit.
    WHERE: Gray bins with orange labels. Located in Recycling Centers.
    HOW: Rinse and place in bins.


    Metal

    WHAT: Metals from construction projects or from appliances, tools, etc.
    WHERE: Bring to Physical Plant.
    HOW: Isolate the metal parts.


    Wood

    WHAT: Scrap wood.
    WHERE: Bring to Physical Plant.


    Redeemable bottles and cans

    WHAT: All drink containers with a ME 5-cent refund label, including beer, wine, juice, water, soda; plastic, glass, aluminum containers.
    WHERE: In tall cardboard box in the Recycling Center labeled "Returnables." This will soon be replaced with a yellow container.
    HOW: Make sure drink container is empty.


    Newspapers and Magazines

    WHAT: Newsprint and magazines, including directories and glossy papers.
    WHERE: In red bins in Recycling Centers.
    HOW: Stack neatly


    Corrugated Cardboard

    WHAT: Corrugated cardboard, the kind with the wavy layer sandwiched between two flat layers. Pizza boxes must be clean and grease free. We are working with local Pizza establishments to have them include a layer of wax paper to protect the box, so they are always grease free.
    WHERE: Stack in or next to Recycling Center.
    HOW: Flatten and Stack. Please do not just pile up the boxes. This creates too much work for the recycling crew.


    Packing peanuts:
    Give to Maria Libby, environmental coordinator. She will make a semi-regular delivery to a Mailing Service in Auburn for reuse.

    Overhead transparencies:
    Give to Maria Libby, environmental coordinator. She will coordinate a semi-regular mailing to 3M, where they are recycled.

    Laser Cartridges:
    Send used cartridges - via campus mail - back to Information Services.

    Ink-Jet Cartridges:
    Deposit in container near Recycling Center, the Bookstore or directly to Information Services.
