Matthew Hale and the organization formerly known as "The "World Church of the Creator" plans to hold a rally in Lewiston on January 11, 2003. The "National Alliance" has also been leafleting and recruiting in the Lewiston/Auburn area.This page offers information to members of the Bates College community who wish to find out more about these groups and who may wish to respond to this group's presence in our community.

Public Informational Meeting - 5:30 pm, Lewiston Multipurpose Center . 145 Birch St., Lewiston. Sponsored by the Many and One Coalition. Open to the public.

 

We'll be updating people on the latest info, answering questions, working out last minute logistics, and trying to put people to work helping out with all the last minute tasks.

 

Campus Informational Meeting - 7:30 pm Chase Hall - space limitations require us to limit this event to members of the Bates community. The purpose of this meeting is to:

  • a) give members of the Bates community accurate information as to what has happened over break
  • b) acquaint members of the Bates community with multiple ways they can respond and be involved
  • c) connect members of the Bates community who are interested in involvement with one another

 All Campus Meeting -  Chase Lounge: 7:00 pm: a student directed forum to discuss the issues January 11th raises for the Bates community.

Friday, 1/10

4:15 p.m. - Teach-in at the in Muskie Archives, The Ideology of Hate Past and Present. Participants include Stephen Hochstadt, Steven Wessler, U.S.M., and Kelvin Datcher from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Bates Community International Dinner - Commons - 5:00 - 7:00 pm - space limitations require us to limit this event to members of the Bates community [donations will benefit community organizations]

Friday Night Service of Worship   - 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center, 94 Bradman St., Auburn. ed by lay leaders of the synagogue, the 60-minute service will be followed by a talk, titled "Bigotry and Wounded Masculinity," by Howard Solomon, professor of history and of gay and Jewish studies at Tufts University and scholar-in-residence at the Lesbian and Gay Archives at the University of Southern Maine's Jean Byers Sampson Center on Diversity.

Candlelight Vigil - step outside and light a candle from 8:00-8:30. All over the state people just like you will brave the cold and dark to stand together for our community.

American History X - 11:00pm - Olin 104 [donations will benefit the Trinity Jubilee Center which provides social services to folks in downtown Lewiston]

The Interactive Nature of Gender and Racial Discrimination: A Social Dominance and Evolutionary Perspective. PGill G52, 4:15 pm (Keck Classroom). The Psychology Club sponsors a talk by Professor Jim Sidanius  of UCLA. Open to the general public at no charge.

Ali Khalif Galaydh - 7:30pm, Muskie Archives. The prime minister of Somalia in 2000 and 2001, will speak on the past and future of Somalia [open to the public at no charge].
