2009 - 2010
http://www.bates.edu/acad/offcampusstudy/

In the pages that follow, information is provided on over 200 opportunities for junior semester and junior year abroad study.  The Fall Semester program is designed and taught by Bates faculty.  The other opportunities are organized by special opportunity and then by geographic region.  Each entry is linked to its sponsor's web site where more detailed information is available.  Brochures and student evaluations for most programs are available in the Off-Campus Study Library. All the information is, of course, subject to change.  These pages are intended exclusively for use by the students, faculty, and staff of Bates College.

Students are urged to supplement this online information with:

  • Discussions with faculty, Mr. Das and Dean Sawyer,
  • Evaluations and other materials on file in the off-campus study library in Lane Hall, and
  • Discussions with the Bates faculty, juniors and seniors who have participated on the programs. (These individuals are listed for each program.)
Background information, including safety and health information, is available on the Pre-Departure Planning web page.  The U.S. State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs web site provides the latest "Consular Information Sheets," "Travel Advisories," and "Travel Warnings."  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a similarly informative site for health and immunization issues.

Bates Fall Semester Abroad Program

This program provides an excellent opportunity to develop a foreign language skill and to study abroad with Bates faculty.  In addition to getting to know the faculty, it is an opportunity to study a theme with them that can carry through to a major.  Intensive language instruction is a large part of the program. However, since there are no prerequisites, one can initiate the study of a language, renew a high school language, or study a language at a more advanced level.  This program is unique in that all classes, including first-years and sophomores, are welcome to participate.  The faculty leading the program conduct information sessions during the year.

St. Petersburg, Russia Professors Costlow (Russian) and Ásgeirsdóttir (Politics) will lead this program. In addition to Russian langauge, students will take two courses: "Identity and Place in Contemporary Russia" and "Russian Political Economy." There will be travel within Russia, including excursions to Moscow and the medieval cities of Novgorod and Pskov, and an extended stay on Lake Baikal. Comprises a General Education Concentration.
