Diversity and Study Abroad

For many Bates students, study abroad will be the first time that they experience "minority" status. For other Bates students, study abroad entails being a minority in a completely different way. Brown University has published a collection of student (both majority and minority) impressions of the study abroad experience.

The Rainbow SIG administered by Indiana University provides information and resources for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgendered students who are considering study abroad. Out & About is the basic newsletter for gay and lesbian travelers.

Mobility International USA provides information and resources for people with disabilities who are considering study abroad.

Students of color may find the Michigan State University website helpful. The MSU web site contains a list of scholarships available to students of color considering study abroad. Study abroad providers often have scholarship opportunities directed at students of color.

The Center for Global Education is a good clearinghouse for diversity issues.
