Site Visits
Funded by the Barlow Endowment for Study Abroad
Bates has a special fund to
support faculty visits to study abroad programs and universities used
by our students. Most
faculty travel to locations where their majors study to gain first hand knowledge of the program or university and its setting. Typically,
the Barlow Endowment for Study Abroad supports several trips
per year, often with faculty combining the funds with other resources,
including conference and personal travel. The Endowment can support the entire cost if the programs or universities have not been visited recently and the faculty member is particularly well positioned to evaluate them. In general, funding is limited to times when the program or university is in session. As a result, the best
travel times are during sabbatical leave, February or April break,
and the first week of Short Term if not teaching then. The Off-Campus
Study Committee is responsible for allocating the funds. Additional
information and applications are available in the Off-Campus
Study Office in Lane Hall.
