Wildness within Wildness without
Exploring Maine’s Thoreau-Wabanaki TrailPhotographs by Bridget Besaw
Taking Different Trails and Wildness within Wildness without continue our year long series exploring themes related to environmental issues, such as sustainability, conservation, wilderness, and landscape.
The Wildness within Wildness without exhibition is part of the Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail celebration in 2007. Henry David Thoreau made trips to Maine in 1846, 1853 and 1857, each of which followed ancient Wabanaki canoe routes through vast, primitive wilderness. He climbed high on "Ktaadn" in 1846, visited Chesuncook Lake with Penobscot guide Joe Attean in 1853, and reached distant Eagle Lake in the Allagash with Penobcot guide Joe Polis in 1857 before returning to Indian Island via the East Branch of the Penobscot River.

Taking Different Trails:
The Artists Journey to Katahdin Lake
This features the work of 20 contemporary artists and their views of and from Katahdin Lake. All of the participating artists were among those involved in the Katahdin Lake Campaign that helped conserve a piece of the Maine wilderness containing a pristine Katahdin Lake, an old growth forest, and a view that has inspired generations of artists.
