Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale is designed to be a diorama of a museum, or more appropriately a curio cabinet, although a bestiary system would have been interesting too. Fully understanding the curio cabinet’s limitations, and attempting to create change, the exhibition offers the freedom to continue the healing process between the dreadful dichotomy of “feeling and intellect” and “simple to complex” that Purcell and Gould’s work illuminates. Purcell’s writing and conceptual photography, espoused so eloquently in Illuminations, provide much foregrounding of the issues raised in these projects. One can readily see her influence on many of the artists in the exhibition.
