Concept Review: Chapter Sixteen introduces the Third Declension adjectives. This is the other major category of adjectives in Latin, the first category being the magnus, a, um type of adjectives. The second category is the Third Declension adjectives. These adjectives have similar forms to those of the Third Declension I-stem adjectives. Points to remember about Third Declension Adjectives: -i in the Ablative singular of all genders -ium in the Genitive plural of all genders -ia in the Neuter Nominative and Accusative plural For further references of forms of Third Declension Adjectives please refer to page 105 and/or page 447 in your Wheelock textboook. Remember: Third Declension Adjectives may modify nouns in any declension. The adjective must agree with the gender, number, and case of the noun it modifies. These adjectives function the same way as other adjectives. 1. They modify noun. -> omnis puer, omnis puella, omne mare, 2. They serve as predicate nominatives. -> Puer est fortis. The boy is strong. 3. They take the place of nouns/substanive adjectives. Fortes populum ducunt. Strong men lead the people. |
