for Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis (See our website) |

Barnacle cirri x200
Located in the basement of Carnegie, the
lab is currently equipped with a JEOL JSM-6100 scanning electron
microscope (ca. 1990) with a Thermo/Noran Sigma Super-Dry Energy
Dispersive Spectormeter. Digital imaging is done via AIA2 software.
All the instrumentation is maintained under continuing service
contracts. Routine maintenance, training, and lab oversight is
provided by Greg Anderson. For more information contact:

neurobiology workstation
|
The neurobiology and physiology labs
have multiple workstations equiped with modern digital data acquisition
setups. Computers and software are upgraded on a routine schedule. |
| Green House Facility |
| The greenhouse sits atop
Carnegie Science Building and runs the entire length. The roof
has automated ventilation (high cfm blower assisted) and manual
table level vents. Supplemental heat is hot water baseboard.
A collection of temperate, tropical, and neotropical plants are
maintained by student staff and the greenhouse coordinator, Mary
Hughes. A small, recirculating wet wall and pond (below,
left) are used to cultivate various vascular and nonvascular
plants. A small terrarium houses a variety of local peat bog
species. The greenhouse is used for both teaching and research
by students and faculty. The coordinator maintains all needed
supplies for routine cultivation. |

| Growth Chambers |
| The department has four large, but old,
temperature/light/humidity controlled growth chambers suitable
for botanical research. |
 |
| Flow Cytometer |
|
We have one Becton-Dickinson flow cytometer
(ca. 1993) with cell sorting/ collection capabilities that is
used for both student and faculty research in immunology and
cell biology. Training and maintenance of the instrument is provided
by Beth Whalon.

| Darkrooms, Digital Photography,
and Bates College Computing and Imaging Center |
| Carnegie Science has two darkrooms set
up for chemical photographic processing. One darkroom is located
within the Electron Microscopy Lab, the other is for general
use. Both are maintained by Greg Anderson. Routine supplies
are maintained to support the work of both faculty and students
for the academic program. Research supplies are purchased out
of grants. The department has various microscopes equipped for
digital micrography (SEM, compound and dissecting). In addition,
the Imaging Center
has microscopy labs set up so that imaging can be done
in the course of experiments on site. |

| Teaching and Research
Lab Computing |
| All teaching and research labs in biology
are equipped with Dell PCs and updated on a four year cycle.
In addition, our core biology course labs have wireless networked
laptop PCs. Printing is done locally or at network laser printers
located around campus. A variety of general purpose software
(e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Prism 5, graphics, Excel, etc)
is provided by the Library and Information Services through the
Bates network. The Biology Department also provides statistical
(e.g., GraphPad Prism, Minitab) and graphical (e.g.,Adobe Photoshop)
software via the network to support our programs. |
