STUDENT RESEARCHERS
SUMMER - 2009

Nancy Kleckner's Lab (neurobiology)

Snail brains occupied the hands and minds of Mimi Gallo '09, Mayur Contractor '10 and Alexia Zhang '10 this summer as they studied the involvement of glutamate, neuropeptide F and GABA, respectively, in the neural control of feeding in the freshwater pond snails Helisoma sp. and Biomphalaria sp. Mimi, Mayur, and Lexie utilized electrophysiology, neuronal tracing and immunocytochemistry to understand the modulatory nature of these neurotransmitters.

Ryan Bavis's Lab (physiology)

Julia Wilson '10 (left) is examining the protein expression of TrkB and Ret, receptors to the neurotrophic factors Bdnf and Gdnf, in neonatal rat carotid bodies following postnatal exposure to moderate hyperoxia. Anzela Niraula '10 (ctr-right) is employing various immunohistochemical methods to determine carotid body size in quail exposed perinatally to moderate hyperoxia and blood vessel diameter in the carotid bodies of neonatal rats. Nawshaba Nawreen '11 (ctr-left) and Nelish Pradhan '10 (right) are measuring nerve recordings on neonatal rat carotid bodies to determine developmental oxygen sensitivity.

Rebecca Sommers' Lab (toxicology)

Annie Carlton '10 and Clyde Bango '11 are working this summer with Rebecca Sommer's lab. Annie is investigating the expression of genes related to type II diabetes in the liver of mice exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of arsenic (low-dose exposure) to investigate a mechanism by which low-dose arsenic exposure could cause type II diabetes.

Karen Palin's Lab
(microbiology/ public health)

Scott Sinisgalli '10 is analyzing survey data collected by Bio s39 students in their study of vitamin D deficiency in the Somali population in Lewiston. Variables such as time in the US, literacy in any language, presence of a male in the household, number of children in household, with understanding about how to use prescription medications and successful treatment for Vitamin D deficiency in the local Somali population. Questions to be addressed include: What predicts successful use of medications? Or what are the risk factors that might be involved in non-successful treatment?
