Summer Research Students 2008

Ryan Bavis's Lab (physiology)

Kristen Young '09, Thomas Broge '08, and Kristen Meyers '09, study respiratory physiology in rats in the lab of Prof. Ryan Bavis. Meyers is examining the effect of hyperoxia on exercise performance of rats using a treadmill and endurance trials. Broge is invetsigating post-natal changes in carotid body volume in rats exposed to room, hypoxic, and hyperoxic air, while Young is studying the effect of acute hypoxia on metabolic rate in rats.

Rebecca Sommer's Lab (toxicology)

Eddy Connors (L), from Boston University, is analyzing blood pressure telemetry data from mice exposed to low levels of arsenic. Abigail Counterman '10 (Ctr) and Annie Carlton '10 (R) are examining the histology of placentas and kidneys of pregnant mice following low-level arsenic exposure. These students are supported by NIH funding.

Will Ambrose's Lab (marine ecology)

Recent graduate Bill Locke '08 and Alexia Zhang '10 studied the effect of bait worm digging on the growth and population characteristics of the blood worm, Glycera dibranchiata, at various intertidal mudflat sites in southern Maine.

Ron Barry's Lab (mammalogy)

Elizabeth Rogers '09 and Nelish Pradhan '10 spent the summer collecting black-legged (deer) ticks (Ixodes scapularis) from small mammals and, in conjunction with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, analyzing the tick populations and their infection rates with the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Nancy Kleckner's Lab (neurobiology)

Snail brains occupied the hands and minds of Mimi Gallo '09 and Mayur Contractur '10 this summer as they studied the involvement of glutamate receptors with the neural control of feeding in the freshwater pond snails Helisoma sp. and Biomphalaria sp.

Pam Baker's Lab (immunology)

The immunology of periodontal disease was under investigation this summer by Lauren Okano '11, Sebastien Pedraza '11, and Talitha McMillan (Eastern Maine Community College, Bangor) seen here prepping and then running HELA cells labeled with flourescent antibodies on the FAC Sorter cytometer.
