- Videos for your viewing: The viewing of online videos is another important activity
from which you can learn important material.
- There are six required videos to watch, all part of the PBS Evolution Series:
- EVOL 01 - Darwin's Dangerous Idea
- EVOL 02 - Great Transformations
- EVOL 03 - Extinction
- EVOL 04 - The Evolutionary Arms Race
- EVOL 05 - Why Sex?
- EVOL 06 - The Mind's Big Bang
- Quizzes on these videos represent 5% of your grade for the course.
- You can view the videos (and take the video quizzes) at any time during the semester, subject to the deadline (below).
(However, you are encouraged to do this early in the semester, before you get too busy.)
- Please send me email if you cannot access the videos by following the instructions below.
- First, try changing computers or changing web browsers. This seems to fix many problems.
- Try following the instructions again, and WRITE DOWN at what step in the process you cannot
continue (along with any error messages).
You can then email me with better specifics.
- Go to the third floor of the Library and use one of the public computers up there, near the Help Desk.
That way, help is only a few feet away if you reach an impasse.
- Access to the videos (instructions revised 2019):
- First, go to Blackboard. (There is a link from our class web page.)
Once on Blackboard, click Contents on the left panel, then choose
the particular video you are interested in.
The videos have the word "Evolution" spelled out fully
in blue with underlining.
Click here to see an example.
- Each video lasts about 40-45 minutes.
- It is usually a good idea to take the quiz just after you watch the video, before you forget any details.
- Access to video quizzes:
- To access video quizzes, go to Blackboard. (There is a link from our class web page.)
Once on Blackboard, click Contents on the left panel, then choose
the particular test you are interested in.
The tests are abbreviated "EVOL" (with a number) in
BLACK lettering with no underlining.
Click here to see an example.
- You will have 20 minutes to complete each quiz.
- You can take each quiz up to a maximum of 3 times if you feel that you can improve your score. Only your best score counts.
- Videos and video quizzes are available throughout the semester-- take them whenever you wish.
It's a good idea to take them early in the semester, before your work load piles up.
- Please email me if the quizzes don't seem to be working right.
- Video quiz timing and deadlines:
- You may view the videos and take the quizzes at any time throughout the semester,
but you are advised to start doing so as soon as possible, before you get too busy--
DON'T PUT THEM OFF!
- In order to encourage you to start early and pace yourself throughout the semester,
the grades for the first two quizzes will be part of your first interim grade report
that follows shortly after the first exam, and the grades for the first four quizzes will be
part of your second interim grade report shortly after the second exam.
- The absolute deadline for completing the video quizzes for credit is 11 p.m. on
the day of our last class. (See the syllabus for the exact date.)
