THE ORIGIN OF JAWS

Until jaws evolved, vertebrates were destined to be an ecologically minor group.
Jaws first evolved from gill cartilages, and teeth soon evolved on their margins.
The first jawed vertebrates were the Acanthodians and the heavily armored Placoderms.
