CLADISTICS LAB: INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITE-UPS

  • Each group should submit a single joint report for this lab.
  • Your report for this lab should include only a Results section and a Discussion section. (See Knisely's Handbook for an explanation of what these sections mean.)
  • Your Results should include a four-species character matrix and four-species cladogram, plus an enlarged 7-species character matrix and a matching 7-species cladogram, plus any additional information as needed to explain what you have done.
  • Your Discussion should explain why certain characteristics were chosen over others in defining your clades, which character states were judged to be synapomorphies (and why), which were judged to be symplesiomorphies or homoplasies (and why).
  • IMPORTANT: See the general directions for lab reports posted at
http://abacus.bates.edu/acad/depts/biobook/LabInfo.htm   (including the instructions for group reports and for illustrations).
