EXAM INFORMATION AND STUDY GUIDES

  • EXAM DATES:   CLICK HERE for the schedule.
  • SCOPE OF EACH EXAM:   The exams will be non-cumulative; material covered on a previous exam will not be covered again. Chapters covered for each topic are listed in the schedule and in the syllabus.
  • EXAM FORMAT:   Exam questions will be mostly the first two of the following three types:
    1. Questions requiring a single word or two-word term as an answer, either as a sentence completion or as a diagram label
(A word bank may or may not be provided for such questions.)
    2. "Free format" questions requiring definitions or short explanations to be written in your own words, such as:
      1. explaining what a concept means
      2. explaining why too much (or too little) of some variable may be problematical
      3. outlining the steps in some process
      4. summarizing the differences between two (or more) major types of something (parallel lists often work well in answering these questions)
You may include simple drawings to any free-format explanation, and they are often helpful, but they are not required.
Free-format questions will often have choices (such as answering two out of three questions), so read the instructions carefully.
    3. Perhaps some multiple-choice questions, in small quantities only; these may be in the form of two-column matchings
  • Exams (and shorter quizzes) will be untimed, so take the time to show everything you know (while staying on topic).
  • With just one exception, I do not take off for spelling, as long as the word sounds right when pronounced. The one exception is that you need to distinguish between ILIUM (a pelvic bone) and ILEUM (part of the intestine) by spelling them correctly.
  • WHAT TO STUDY:
    CHECK THE ONLINE CHAPTER OUTLINES;
study guides will be added to each before that chapter's material appears on an exam.
Every chapter has a chapter summary at the end, with many page references. These are the best summaries of each chapter's material; go over them in detail. Also examine all illustrations (including their labels and their captions) appearing in the book or posted online, emphasizing those that were shown in class or referred to in class by their page number.
Vocabulary words are printed in boldface in the book and listed in each chapter's study guide; make sure you understand these terms and be prepared to define them.
  • If you have any questions about whether a certain topic will or will not be covered, please feel free to email me.
  • Students who need special accommodations for the exam will receive special instructions via email. Please make sure that I am aware of your needs.
  • If you miss the exam for any reason, it is your responsibility to email me and arrange for a make-up.
