Sediments are laid down in layers.
When they are compressed and solidified into rocks, the rocks are also layered.
The study of layered rocks is called stratigraphy, and each layer is called
a stratum (plural, strata).
The next few topics deal with stratigraphy and its uses in determining geologic time.
