Proposals From The Ad Hoc
Calendar Committee

Committee Members: Meredith Braz, James Carignan, Megan Casey '99, Randy DePaolo '99, Dyk Eusden, James Reese, John Strong, Liz Tobin

In the spring of 1996, the faculty created our committee in order to consider whether our current academic calendar best suits our educational needs. We have interviewed many people, heard suggestions from many more, compared Bates' calendar to those of other schools and surveyed the faculty and a sample of alumni. We now present to you the results of our discussions about the information we have gathered.

We have created several possible proposals for changing, perhaps improving, the academic calendar at Bates, and we offer these differing proposals to the community for discussion. After a series of open meetings and an opportunity for people to send us comment, we will determine which, if any, of these proposals we will recommend as legislation to the faculty. The proposals we offer for discussion are the following: 1) Mainstreaming Short Term, 2) September Term, 3) Modified 4-4-1 Calendar. We also present for discussion two proposals for a new class schedule: Grid I and Grid II.

None of the proposed calendar changes, with the possible exception of changes in class scheduling, would be proposed to go into effect until the academic year 2000-2001, in order to give faculty and students adequate time to prepare for the changes.
